Meet Unity + Giveaway!

Last year we introduced a very special yarn called Unity, along with its patterned counterpart, Unity Beyond.

Unity/Unity Beyond is made up of linen, cotton, bamboo, and wool. Man, I love a good blend, especially when it’s the best of both plant and animal worlds, as is the case with Unity. This yarn is bursting with character. Let me give you a closer look:

Color 204 Boardwalk

The bamboo, wool, and cotton are combed together and twisted, and a fine strand of linen is wrapped around. The strand is just a bit thick and thin, but subtly so. In the Unity Beyond colorways, the dye is printed on just one side of the yarn giving an organic, washed out appearance.

Last week we released Desert Dreams, a collection of 6 pieces in the yarn. (link to ebook)

This collection was photographed just blocks from our office here in Charlotte at an old-timey general store called Davis General Merchandise. The owner, Silas, kindly allowed us to shoot around the grounds to take advantage of the aged, rich texture of the building materials. Our own Rachel Brockman did the photography, so every shot is through the knitter’s eye.

All patterns can be purchased via Ravelry as individual downloads or together as an ebook. (Ravelry link)

And that brings me to our giveaway! Crochet expert Ellen Gormley released a swatching video featuring Unity Beyond. I work with our yarns every day, so it’s always interesting to me to hear another’s take on our products. Ellen does not disappoint! You can see her video here: (link video)

And if you’re interested in brushing up on some crochet techniques, follow Ellen’s youtube channel. She has lots of instructional videos.

But back to free yarn! Here are the details:

  • Two lucky crafters will win the Atacama Scarf pattern and the yarn to make it with (3 skeins of Unity Beyond!)
  • For a chance to win, leave us a comment on this post. Keeping in line with our Unity theme and Ellen’s commentary about why one might like to work with a yarn like this that has such rich character, in your comment, tell me something unique about yourself
  • Leave this comment before Monday, July 3, 12 pm EST
  • Winners will be announced on July 4
  • Eligible for US crafters only (no offense, international peeps!)

And that’s it! Craft on, and keep on doing whatever it is that makes you, you!

  1. I love wool blends, and this yarn looks like a great one. Interesting that the dye is printed on one side. Colorways look yummy too!

  2. I love this yarn. Very pretty best used in double crochet. She was correct in saying that the more intricate pattern does not show up as well. I would probably make a longer vest or a scarf.

  3. What is so unique about me? I don’t knit the way most other people do. I lost my half my right thumb to cancer and have to hold my needle in a very unique way. I would love to try this yarn. It looks so pretty.

    1. So sorry about your losing your thumb. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness 2 years ago and crochet is my hobby now.

  4. This blend sounds splendid! I always find a special pattern for such special yarn

  5. I love natural fabrics and yarn. Unity & Unity Beyond looks perfect for my shabby chic lifestyle & knitting journey. I envision a capelet, to keep my shoulders and neck warm with this lovely yarn.

  8. Would like to try this yarn especially since I plan to move from the frozen tundra of Wisconsin to the heat of Glendale, Arizona. Plus I just love working with different yarn bases whenever possible.

  9. I would love a chance to work with this yarn. Something unique about me…I was born and married on the 13th of the month. No Friday the 13th fear here!

  10. This yarn is unique, not only in the colorist but in the way it is spun. I think some of the colored will work for a sweater for my husband!! I love the blends! I am excited to use this yarn!

  11. I imagine that the 3 fibers offer a satisfying experience working them into a knit or crochet project. Each fiber is individually uniquely strong and responsive to heat or moisture. I bet it would be such a pleasure to knit up that Atacama scarf or mmmm… that Kalahari wrap. The pieces could become a long lasting staple in anyone’s closet…especially with yarn of such integrity and character. Love love love.

  12. I love the way the colors blend together. The fiber blends would make a truly soft item. The Atacama scarf shows the yarn beautifully. Hmmm, something unique about me, sorry ,can’t think of anything.

  13. I’ve only crocheted with cotton or acrylic yarn and would love to work with a wool blend, it sounds amazing to work with. I don’t knit but this yarn makes me want to learn to knit.

  14. I enjoyed Ellen’s swatching video. Using a triple crochet or tunisian crochet stitch or knitted pattern this yarn will add texture and design to the project.
Something unique about me . . . I ring handbells in my church handbell choir. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but I can make a Joyful noise with the handbells! 🎶💜

  15. I would love to make a top from this yarn, I love he colors and the texture changes. What is unique about me, I use knitting and crocheting to help me fight anxiety and depression

  16. I would love to make a rectangle vest with this yarn! I think it would flowers beautifully! Loved the shell and chain stitch Ellen Gormley demonstrated!

  17. This unity yarn is just so beautiful. Looks so soft also. Well, here’s something unique about me since these are the rules for the giveaway. I’m was diagnosed with lupus 2 years ago. Since I’m disabled at this point due to extreme fatigue, I decided to take back my crochet hobby and keep my mind busy. I recently finished my first blanket and was so happy!

  18. I would love to try this yarn. What is unique about me? I was in a major accident which has changed my life. That is why I started to crochet. I love watching Ellen Gromley. I have learned a lot.

  19. I would love to win this giveaway. Something unique about me is that I got to talk about crochet and knitting on my med school applications this year, I’ll be starting my medical education in the fall!

  20. I am not surprised that you chose to “unify” with Ellen as she has excellent videos to “unify” with your beautiful yarn.

  21. The yarn looks incredibly soft! Something unique about me.. well I’m a couple weeks away from my due date and will be welcoming my first child into the world! So that’s exciting

  22. I think that this would be lovely crocheted in a wrap. Something unique about me…I’m horrible at reading maps.

  23. I love to knit, crochet and sew. I have the most wonderful Boston Terrier, her name is Rosie.

  24. I’m working with a yarn in a similar blend that does not have the wool in it and love it. This yarn looks amazing and I can’t wait to try it. The scarf is beautiful, and I also like the kimono pattern very much!

  25. This yarn looks gorgeous, and the blend really fascinates me.
I just recently returned to knitting, finishing my first (ever) project in January of this year. Although I first learned decades ago during a stay in Germany, I had never actually made anything! Now I can’t stop! And I want to learn crochet and Tunisian, too.

  26. I love working with bamboo and cotton – they are just so soft! What is unique about me??? All of me is unique! I have purple hair, love to sing, work in accounting and love crocheting as it lets me be so creative and it is all about the math. When you have figured out the math to the pattern you can do so much with it. I also own a great dane named Basil.

  27. Uniqueness is unique!! Unique yarn is a treasure and a unique trait is what makes you you! I have many tiny unique things from my children to me. My kids are very unique, both redheads. My 14yr girl is tall and at 95% height for her age. My 16yr son is small and at 5% height for his age. I covered the spectrum.

  28. Thank you for the great swatching video! My favorite was the double crochet and I would probably make a scarf with this yarn, although the tank pattern is lovely as well. I appreciate the way the yarn varies in thickness and how that would make the finished garment more beautiful and interesting. Something unique about me is that I genuinely enjoy making my own things, weather is homemade whole grain mustard, grommet drapes or crochet hats and scarfs.

  29. This yarn looks amazing! Your enthusiam for this yarn is contagious! Really want to try it!

  30. Ilove the look of this yarn. Love the different textures. Love to win this giveaway to get to use this yarn. Thanks for introducing me to it.

  31. I love the look of this yarn as it provides more of a handmade, homespun look. The blend of all the different fibers appeal to me. I guess it’s because it’s unique like me and my family. A conglomeration of races and backgrounds like I’d like to hope we all could be. We are all humans and all the same but all unique in our own ways. Ignoring all my medical issues and not getting anymore political 😳, I have a funny unique thing, one ear is different than the other lol. Didn’t notice till I got my ears pierced and then I was traumatized! 😂 The things you worry about at 11. lol

  32. Omg!! New yarn !!!! is a MUST try. And I just love Amy Gundersons patterns I’m working on her 3 color pattern now and I call myself her problem child, lols shes amazingly talented and helpful. And also too; Yarn DOES makes a difference. Excited to try it on my next project.
I’d be truly grateful to win this. good luck to all and God bless.

  33. The yarn has a very interesting blend of fibers. Love theIr pattern😊💗💗

  34. This yarn looks great I’ve only worked with acrylic and cotton so this would be a great treat. Looks soft yet textured. I’d love to make a scarf. I enjoy making things for others it’s usually a great way to lend a hand to those in need and gives me something to do to relax in my downtime. Thanks and have a fabulous day!

  35. I like the thick/thin of this yarn, but I worry about gauging it (like Ellen mentioned in the video, I’d need a big swatch and I am too new to figure that out). So I would make a scarf or afghan so the exact dimensions wouldn’t be too important.
Something unique about me is that I served for almost 32 years in the u.s. army and retired from the army about 1.5 years ago.

  36. Love the colors. I can see a scarf being made for a retired elementary music teacher who started a dulcimer group and continues to teach us to play. No music knowledge needed. Would be a great way to say thank you.

  37. I love working with unique yarns and I am sure (by watching Ellen’s video) I won’t be disappointed. This yarn is also beautifully crafted. I love the way it is imperfectly, perfect. It gives it character. I am a grandmother of 10 & also have 2 great-grandsons . I crochet for them very often.

  38. My “claim” to fame? I’m a mother of triplet girls (and a son). They are adults now, but we all survived. 😊
I’m a knitter but 2 of my daughters crochet. I’d let them fight over who gets the pattern, I’d have to think about sharing the yarn. 😳

  39. Hello! The yarn is GORGEOUS! Something unique…hmmm…well, I’ve only been hooking for a little over the year after becoming permanently disabled. Umph. Not my favorite word. But I digress…crocheting has literally saved my sanity! Due to limited income, I’ve only been able to hook with the lesser expensive acrylics and cottons (YAY for WALMART! ) so I’ve not yet had the experience of using a blend of any sort! So…I guess I’m a blend virgin 🙂 HA!! And I do love Ellen’s videos…

  40. Such beautiful yarn!! I think we are all unique in our own ways. God made us that way. I’m probably unique in my outlook on life. I always try to be a positive person and look for the good in everyone.

  41. I would love to make a scarf or comfort shawl with this new yarn blend. Something unique about me, I guess that with fiber techniques I am a jack-of-all-trades. I do knitting, crochet, shuttle tatting, knotting, off -loom weaving, embroidery, quilting, and . . . .!

  42. I really like how this yarn just pulls all the colors together in a beautiful way with how the yarn is thin and all of a sudden has a thicker spot!! Thank you for this great giveaway!!

  43. Beautifully comfortable look, and so fine!! Crochet garments in this yarn will be nice all year round. Creating for others is mostly what I do but I don’t know if I could gift this or not….so tempting to keep.

  44. Lovely stuff and colour do a lot of crochet and make shawls dish cloths and other things would love to win please enter me hopefully would get lucky amazing giveaway.

  45. This yarn looks delightful. Years ago my husband was stationed in Germany and I came across the most beautiful crocheted pieces. Being on an Army budget meant there was no extra cash for crafting….so I found some very inexpensive crochet thread and a German craft magazine and taught myself how to crochet by studying the charts ( I spoke very little Deutsche) I still have those doilies all these years later.

  46. After being in school for four years I have rediscovered the joy of crocheting and love making items as gifts. I especially like variegated and mixed fibers because I hate tying in loose ends! Lol. I learned to crochet when I was seven and I take projects to work on when camping in the wilderness (I live in Wyoming) via horse and mules.

  47. What’s unique about me is that most of the projects I crochet are made from yarn people have gifted to me and for other people as gifts. This hobby doesn’t cost me money but rather saves me money (because my budget requires).

  48. This yarn is so soft in color but is eye popping in character. I love the color blend. I like to make things like sweaters, capes, poncho’s ect…. I like giving my creations to the needy to keep them warm. This is very special to me.

  49. The fiber content of this yarn is right up my alley! This yarn looks like it would be so much fun to play with, I absolutely loved Ellen’s video!

  50. I loved Ellen’s swatches, they really showed the beauty of this yarn. I guess you’d have to know me, to know how unique I am!

  51. Love the yarn – it would make a gorgeous shawl – my unique fact is that among my friends, I am the only one married just once and have been married to hubby for 44 years.

  52. I love the texture of this yarn! It looks like it would make some very special gifts.

  53. Probably not as unique as your yarn, but I am a retired registered nurse, gardening author, master gardener, seamstress, knitter, crocheted, and cook!

  54. I’m a 911 dispatcher. When I’m not working, I spend my time with lovely fibers like this. I’m already in Christmas mode…knitting and crocheting like a mad-woman for friends and family.

  55. I am learning to crochet right now and this looks like a beautiful project to work on. I need all the help I can get so the pattern with matching yarn would really help me as I learn. Thanks for the opportunity.
