Free Pattern Friday – Willowwork Cowl

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

A tan and gray Fair Isle knitted cowl against a brown background.

Today, the Willowwork Cowl in Deluxe Worsted Superwash (pattern link here).

The inspiration for this piece was the living willow fences, or hedges, or “fedges” that are woven from supple saplings into elegant shapes in the garden.

Mind you, it’s still winter, so the Deluxe Worsted Superwash colors we chose reflect a dormant living fence, while still keeping a warm wood feel.

Oh, the magic of Fair Isle.

If you were one of those admiring Amy Gunderson’s Twisted Yoke Pullover from the Fall ’18 Vogue Knitting…

Here’s the Ravelry link.

…you’ll be pleased to find this uses the same technique. Twisted stitches create a depth that (pardon the expression) raises the design to the next level.

Amy has written this pattern in two sizes – the small size shown here…

…and a larger size suitable for wrapping.

We hope this graceful design hits its mark.

  1. I love your pattern but I’m running into some issues. I saw on ravelry that the 1x1x1 instructions had been corrected but I’m wondering if I have a corrected version or not. If I am doing the 1x1x1 LC, why are the instructions telling me to do a RC after slipping a stitch onto the can in front? If you tell me just to have faith in CarrieAnn, I will do just that. If I’m really supposed to be doing a LC then I will change my copy of the pattern. Thank you!

    1. Hi Kristine,

The pattern that is on our website now has already been corrected. Yes – after slipping the first stitch to the cable needle and holding it to the front, you will work a RC over the next two stitches on the left needle. After that, you will knit the stitch on the cable needle.

You’re not the only one who is struggling with this! We’ve shot a video of the 1x1x1 LC and will be uploading it soon – hopefully this afternoon, but I’d say latest tomorrow. We will link to the video on the pattern page from both our website and Ravelry.

  2. Hello,
I’m starting this wonderful pattern, but I feel like there is a mistake with the Left Cross explanation. Wouldn’t that be Sl next st to cn and hold in front, k1B from left ndl k1A from cn? Instead of k1A then k1B? Thanks a lot!

    1. Hi there,

In the initial pdf that was uploaded, there was a typo in this instruction which has now been corrected. Here is what the pattern now states:

      Option 1:
Right Cross (RC): Sl next st to cn and hold in back,
k1A from left ndl, k1B from cn.
Left Cross (LC): Sl next st to cn and hold in front,
k1A from left ndl, k1B from cn.
1x1x1 Left Cross (LC): Sl next st to cn and hold in
front, RC from left ndl, k1A from cn.
      Option 2:
Right Cross (RC): K2tog A but do not sl st from
ndl, knit the first st again with B, sl both sts from
      ndl.
Left Cross (LC): Knit the second st on the left ndl
through the back loop with B, knit the first st
through the front loop with A, sl both sts from
      ndl.
1x1x1 Left Cross (LC): Sl next st to cn and hold in
      front, RC, k1A from cn.
