Back to School Knits – the Cotton True Kids Collection

It’s that time of year again!  With very mixed feelings, we send our little ones off to school. We might be old hands at the transition, or it might be our very first time.  It’s almost guaranteed, though, that they’ve grown since last year.  Fortunately, we have a collection of kids’ tops to get you through the warm-to-cool transition, in a multitude of sizing!

Cover of knitting pattern e-book. Text on photo reads: Cotton True Kids: 6 adorable knits for little ones.

The Cotton True Kids Collection, featuring 6 knitting projects for kids (Ravelry e-book link here).

All are sized 1-12, and are made in Fibra Natura Cotton True Sport, a smooth and soft 100% Pima cotton.  (We know we have a lot of Bella Cash fans out there too, so we’ll mention that the gauge between the two yarns should match to a T.)

And speaking of tees (pardon my puns!)…

The Begonia Lace Tee (Ravelry link) is worked from the bottom up in pieces.

This sweet lace-shoulder tee would look pretty over a skirt, too.  Not too frou-frou, but still a good way to dress up a plain outfit.  A nice piece!  (Note: autocorrect wanted to call this “a niece piece” and now I’m wondering if I have a niece who would like this.  Hmm..)

Next up, Catkin (Ravelry link) is a pocketed smocked smock (say that five times fast).

Catkin is made in two pieces, tacked together under the arms and joined at the shoulder with buttons.  Easy to get on and off without having to work a wiggling preschooler’s head through the neckhole.  It has handy pockets: I am instantly reminded of Eeyore’s birthday gift of “a useful pot to put things in.” Even better from a parent’s point of view, Cotton True Sport is machine washable.  Easy to clean after a grand adventure.

The Climbing Vine Cardigan (Ravelry link) is a classic with some inspired touches.

Number one: pockets.  Yes.  Thank you. As a parent, I have had to tuck away many a souvenir (four-leaf clover, beach shell, random rock) to carry myself.  How much nicer for a child to carry their own tiny treasure.

Number two: The way the little vines grow out of the pockets, like they’re rising from a flowerpot.  Adorable.

Number three: buttons!  This is the piece that brought home to me how you can make a piece understated or bold, just by changing one detail. Cute with a capital C.

Lacy Leaves (Ravelry link) is a sophisticated lace-front vest (shown here in kid size 4).  We do recommend that you be able to “read” your knitting and be familiar with charts to make this one.

The lace pattern is charted only, because each size (1-12) has its own chart encompassing the entire front. You’ll also want to be able to maintain stitches in pattern at the armholes and neck, hence the “read your knitting” recommendation.  Hopefully, this didn’t scare anyone – once you get started in this pattern, it’s not hard to see what’s going on.

Whee! The Striped Lily Tee (Ravelry link) gets its fun texture from reverse stockinette.

The tee is worked from the bottom up and seamed, and features raglan shaping.  This would be great for warm weather, or as an extra “peel off” layer over a thin long-sleeved top.

The Sweet Lilac Hoodie (Ravelry link) is awfully cute in the 4-year size shown, but it would also give plenty of room to a diaper-bottomed toddler.

The way the lace hem coordinates with the i-cord ties is darling.  Is it too soon to be thinking about Easter?  This could be a really cute holiday gift that will still be wearable in the Spring.

Hit your LYS, grab some yarn, and put all that extra time to good use.  I can hear all the parents and caregivers yelling, “What extra time??”  We feel you – but try to find time to knit!

Free Pattern – Fleurette Lace Pullover

Summertime can be a tough time for a needlecrafter.  It’s hot, and a big project can weigh heavy in your lap, but you don’t want to put down the yarn.  Fortunately, there’s always cotton!

To beat the heat, try the Fleurette Lace Pullover in Cotton Supreme DK (pattern link here).

Sized Small to 3X, this raglan-sleeved pullover features waist shaping, and is knitted from the bottom up in pieces. It’s quite stylish with a contrasting tank underneath.  This is a nice three season piece.

The lace pattern is both written and charted, and covers front and back.  It calls for Cotton Supreme DK, the lighterweight version of our popular Cotton Supreme DK.  It’s very pretty as shown in a natural 702 Ecru, but there are a lot of ways to go with this one.  Maybe a pretty pastel?

Today, the Mars Top crocheted in Cotton Supreme DK Seaspray (pattern link).

How’s your summer going?  Are you still looking for that perfect project that will be satisfying to make but not stifle you in the heat?

Voila!  Amy Gunderson’s Mars Tee!  Crocheted in the round from the bottom up, this beauty is sized from XS to 4X, with shaping that starts out a little bigger at the base, for those of us with a bigger… um… base.  The point is, this is comfortable and cool.

Double-crocheting three together makes cute little eyelets without making the fabric too lacey-loose.

From personal experience, I can tell you that the Cotton Supreme family is easy on the hands to use. Go with either the called-for Cotton Supreme DK Seaspray, or try solid Cotton Supreme DK.  How cute would this look striped?

Free Pattern Friday – Skipper Sweater

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Skipper Sweater in Bella Cash (link here).

Don’t you love it when cute and practical meet?  The cute: this striped sweater with its nautical feel, sized from 3 months to 4 years.

Work it in the round up to the armholes, then divide it for shaping. Near the end, you’ll add the ribbed buttonbands at the arms for a nice finish.

The practical: that buttonband! I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to get a wiggly baby’s head through a neckhole, but it’s kind of like… well… I’m just going to leave this here.

Yep, that’s about right.

As a parent, I’m also delighted by the choice of Bella Cash for this.  The yarn is machine washable, but with its cashmere content it’s also baby-shower-worthy.  Its palette has a good range of pastels and other kid-friendly tones, too.

All in all, this pullover gets the knitter/mom seal of approval.  Now if you’ll pardon me, I have to go watch some more cat videos.  It just never gets old.

Have a great weekend, and happy crafting!

Free Pattern Friday – Hazy Hat and Pullover

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Hazy Hat and Pullover set in Uptown Worsted Mist (pattern link here).

I actually have a lot of thoughts about this pattern, because

1) I love cables, and

2) I heard the “colorful language” around here as the pattern swelled to 4… 5… and finally to 9 pages.  That’s what happens with extended sizing (although we don’t really consider it “extended”), and full charts and written instructions.

The consensus is that it was worth it.

There are quite a few things to love here, like sizing from Small to 4X in the pullover…

detailing like twists along the sleeve and texture within the front cables…

and how nicely this does in Uptown Worsted Mist, which is variegated enough to add interest but not so much that it overwhelms a lovely design.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and that you take time to do something for yourself.

Free Pattern Friday – Lounge Pullover

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Lounge Pullover in Bella Chenille (pattern link).

First off, a big shout-out to our model Darian.

When we have a model that’s this great to work with (and she really was great), we’re always happy that we can have something comfy and fun for them to wear.

The Lounge Pullover is knitted in Bella Chenille, a soft and fuzzy bulky-weight yarn that’s popular for baby and home decor projects.  However, we recently added some more grown-up colors (like the 119 Misty used here), and we wanted to show what else this yarn can do!

This roomy sweater is knit in pieces from the bottom-up.  Shoulders are joined using the 3-needle bind-off, then the sleeves are picked up and knit from the top-down.   The cables are written and charted.

Such a wonderful piece to slip into – like a big fuzzy hug!

We hope you have a cozy and rewarding weekend.

Free Pattern Friday – Kenan’s Hoodie

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, Kenan’s Hoodie in Deluxe Worsted Tweed superwash (pattern link).

Everybody say hi to Yonca!

Yonca is our Sales Manager, and an excellent knitter and crocheter.  That’s her, sporting the Lace Leaf Pullover that she modified from the free Lace Leaf Cardigan in Garden 10.

Yonca’s kids are off at college, and like many crafting parents, she’s sending them a couple of things to help keep them warm while they’re away.  She gave her daughter a beautiful cardigan – the one we shared last week – and now her son gets his turn.

Kenan’s Hoodie is worked in pieces from the bottom up in Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash. It’s made in one of our newer colors, 915 Cloud Blue, which just straddles the line between blue and gray.

The design features a dropped shoulder and roomy hood for a casual look.  Although we’re calling this a men’s sweater, there’s no reason it wouldn’t work for a woman as well.

We love hearing stories of all the knitted and crocheted “hugs” that people send to loved ones far away.  They’re so satisfying to give and to receive.

We hope you stay warm and cozy this weekend, and that you’re able to reach out to someone you care about.

Happy crafting!

Free Pattern Friday – Shaded Stripes

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, Shaded Stripes in Major (pattern link here).

There’s a lot to love about this easy pullover.  The way the stripes look in reverse stockinette, the comfy fit, the interest provided by two colors of self-shading yarn… we could go on.

This is a good, basic sweater pattern that goes fairly quickly on US size 10 (6mm) needles.  Knit it in pieces, then seam.  If you’ve been a little leery of trying a sweater, this would be a good one to start on.

An image of a black and gray ball of yarn labeled MAJOR.

The sweater uses Major in two colors – 126 Honeydew and 117 Graphite (shown).   You could go wild with color combinations, or keep it grounded by sticking with monochrome 117 Graphite for one of your shades.  There are a lot of possibilities here.

We hope you have a stellar weekend.

Happy crafting!

Free Pattern Friday – Blissful Tee

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Blissful Tee in Cotton True Sport.

Just looking at this top makes me happy.  It’s a charming design in our Fibra Natura Cotton True Sport, a 100% Pima cotton that’s quite pleasant to work with.  It’s the kind of basic top that would look great with jeans or a skirt, plus maybe a little silver jewelry.  The lace detail at the top, which is charted and written, keeps it from being too plain.

Work it from the hem up in two pieces, then join together.  We call for a US Size 4 (3.5mm) needle for the body, but of course use whatever will get you gauge – 6 stitches per inch in this case.  It makes a lightweight cotton fabric that’s perfect for summer.

We hope you enjoy this bit of knitted bliss.

Happy crafting!
