Day 1 of Winter – Series 5 Edition

This is part 1 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, series 5 Edition.

Hello all! 12 Days of Winter is upon us again, and this year marks the 5th year of our kit collection. We’ve gone above and beyond this year to deliver the best kits and patterns possible, and we’ve aimed to showcase as many of our beautiful yarns as we can in the collection. I thoroughly enjoy designing for the 12 Days of Winter because there’s so much variety in designs, all centered around the same thing: the joy of wintertime. I’m a person who loves all things winter and holidays, so I tend to have what feels like endless ideas for these particular projects.

Crystalline Cowl Kit – knit using Dona, Minou, and Universe

For Day 1 of Winter, I designed the Crystalline Cowl. I’m often inspired by nature and color for designs, but in this case, I was inspired by a place I’d love to travel to someday. My absolute ‘dream’ place to visit or even to live would be in the Alsace region of France. This idyllic European region looks like it is the center of a fairytale book series, and I think that would make it such a special place to live. The mixture of the golden lights and the white snowy rooftops in photos of Alsace during winter were my inspiration sources for the Crystalline Cowl.

Some of the techniques you’ll explore in the Crystalline Cowl pattern are:

knitting in the round
grafting
slipped stitch textures
bobbles

No matter where you live, a hand knit cowl will keep you cozy, warm, and stylish on cold days. One of our newest yarns, Minou , was my first choice for this ‘lights and snow’ inspired design. When we first introduced Minou, we knew it would create an incredible, fuzzy lining for accessories. I decided to make the Crystalline Cowl fully lined with the Minou yarn in the color 101 Borzoi. First, the lining is knit using Minou held on its own. Once you complete that portion of the cowl, you join our Dona yarn in the color 101 Vanilla and begin the ribbed bottom of the cowl body. Dona is a soft and plush superwash extrafine merino yarn, perfect for garments and accessories. This combination of yarns feels like something ideal to wear walking along a charming street of shops on a cold winter day.

Finally, to compliment both of the main yarns, I added glimmering Universe in the color 10-03 Crystal. Universe is a unique, shimmering blend of linen and cotton with a metallic thread wrapped around the base. It adds an ethereal, magical glimmer to any project that reminds me of the reflection of lights on snow. Universe is held with Dona for the main jacquard and bobble pattern worked over the body of the cowl. The cowl is long enough to wear draped over your shoulders, or doubled up for maximum coziness. Once all sections are complete, the lining is flipped inside the main cowl, and the ends are grafted together. Top tip: if you’d like to skip the provisional cast-on and grafting called for in the pattern, you can simply cast on and seam the lining to the main cowl body. There you have it- you’ve made the most squishy, soft, and luxurious feeling accessory ever!

Known as the ‘Capitale de Noel’ or Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg is certainly on my wintertime travel bucket list, and I’ll be bringing my Crystalline Cowl with me when I go! Yarn Spotlight: Rico Design Creative Melange Chunky

Hello crafters! As we’re entering the autumn season, all of us at Universal Yarn are thinking about cool weather projects, and the cozy yarns we want to make them in. We recently brought in Creative Melange Chunky from German brand Rico Design, and I thought today was a great opportunity to give a bit of a spotlight to this new and colorful yarn.

Creative Melange Chunky is a plump yarn packed full of stunning color that self-shades as you knit, crochet, or weave. Comprised of virgin wool and acrylic, this yarn is incredibly soft thanks to the springy wool and plush single-ply construction. Quite pleasant to work with, it is well suited to both complex and simple stitch patterns, and makes for unique garments and accessories you’ll treasure for years to come.

This yarn comes in 50g skeins priced at $8.00 each on our web store, making it a great choice for smaller projects like hats and cowls in addition to adding variety for colorwork projects! I must admit, I fell in love with this yarn when I first saw it. The possibilities are virtually endless; there are so many different ways to incorporate a self-shading yarn into a design and create very unique projects! In fact, I am already planning a design of my own for Creative Melange!

Sweater 952 – free pattern from Rico Design

For a free pattern option, we have this downloadable PDF for Sweater 952 (shown above)- a ribbed stitch pullover with balloon style sleeves. Although Rico Design may not have the most *creative* names for their patterns, they always make fashion-forward designs that still feel extremely wearable. I love how this sweater’s shape shows off the yarn’s ability to retain structure, but still look soft and cuddly. Since the yarn self-shades as you work, a simple design like this is often the best way to enhance the yarn’s naural beauty.

For accessory knitters, this paid pattern for Triangular Shawl 768 is stunning. The textural stitch pattern really shows off the stripes the yarn makes as you knit. A wide, triangle-style shawl like this is perfect for styling in many different ways. This shawl is quite wide (about 90″), so it is a perfect design for wrapping around your neck and snuggling up on cold days, and since Creative Melange is chunky weight, it works up quickly!

The last of our new pattern options for Creative Melange Chunky is Jacket 781. This outerwear design is perfect for layering, and the cables on the sleeves show off the incredible stitch definition that this yarn has. You can also see from this pattern to the previous ones just how broad the available color range is! We currently have 20 colors in stock, everything from a grayscale to bright options like this one pictured (#058) featuring green and blue shades. Although I love bright colors and typically fall for pinks and reds, some of the more dark and earthy tones we have (see below photo) really catch my eye. They are beautiful in a different way than the brighter colors, but would also pair quite easily with other autumn and winter wardrobe staples.

The other amazing news is that Creative Melange Chunky is a fabulous substitute yarn for our now discontinued Classic Shades Frenzy! For favorite patterns like the Abari Pullover, simply substitute Creative Melange where Classic Shades Frenzy is called for. Do be mindful when substituting that Frenzy came in 100g skeins, while Creative Melange comes in 50g skeins, so you’ll need to adjust the required amount of yarn for the difference.

Homestead Tank – Musings on the ‘Cottagecore’ trend

Hello crafters! I wanted to start this week off by discussing a really fun topic: design inspiration. In particular, the growing Cottagecore trend, and how it inspired the Homestead Tank free pattern.

It is no secret that the past year has been tough on every single one of us. From spending way more time at home than we’re used to, to the general effects of the pandemic on society, we’re all searching for bright spots in our day-to-day. Over the last year, many people have either picked up or returned to their knitting hobby, as it is mindful and often quite stress relieving. I find myself consistently drawn to simple silhouettes and rhythmic stitch patterns for new designs, as I feel these elements are well suited to the needs of today’s knitter.

Homestead Tank in Flax color 12 Tarragon

When I set out to design a tank top pattern using our Flax yarn, I knew I would use lacy stitches, and a breezy, oversized silhouette. The color Tarragon (12) was my first choice for the design, as it is a beautiful shade of green that I think would flatter anyone. Combining these ideas with the inspiration of the Cottagecore trend, the Homestead Tank was born.

So, what is Cottagecore? It is an aesthetic I have always been drawn to, rather unknowingly, because I love feminine and romantic styles inspired by nature. Over the last couple years, we have seen it blossom into a widespread trend for both fashion and homewares. And what a lovely trend it is! Cottagecore is rooted in an idealized view of countryside living. It is an excuse to ‘escape’ our chaotic modern reality, and be inspired by a slower, more thoughtful way of life that is enriched with the beauty of nature and handmade things.

The Homestead Tank embraces the idyllic beauty of the Cottagecore inspiration. A breezy and boxy silhouette allows you to easily layer this tank top over a flowy dress and run through a field of wildflowers. The stitch pattern is reminiscent of a checkerboard plaid, but with eyelets worked throughout. Although the pattern does use lace stitches, it is a simple and easy-to-memorize repeat. A v-shaped neckline is perfect for catching some warm rays of sunshine on your skin as you enjoy a relaxing afternoon by a lake.

Our Fibra Natura Flax yarn is made of 100% linen fiber that softens every time you wash it. This yarn’s gentle and natural beauty is suited to both textured and lace stitches. Wonderful for garments and accessories for warm weather, there are 34 colors of Flax to choose from. Even if the Tarragon green color (12) isn’t your favorite, I am sure you’ll find a shade that you love. I think Lilac (07) would be a great alternative color choice for this pattern, because it reminds me of a bouquet of Lavender from an herb garden; just perfect for the Cottagecore inspiration.

The Homestead Tank is a seamed top, so you’ll make the front and two back pieces separately. I am especially fond of seamed knitted garments, as they add strength and structure to the finished piece, ensuring it’ll keep its shape through many years of wash and wear. Part of the Cottagecore trend is embracing a slower way of life, and making handmade garments falls perfectly into that. When you knit something for yourself, you’ll treasure it in a way you never would something store bought!

My favorite part of this design is the button up back. Pick up and knit the placket after you seam the pieces together, and hand sew the buttons on upon completion. We chose handcrafted wooden buttons from Katrinkles for this design. I alternated the buttons between the Sunburst and Palm designs down the placket, to add a bit of whimsy to the overall look.

Whether you love being outside, making delicious treats to eat, or crafting something for yourself like the Homestead Tank, the Cottagecore trend has something for you. In a high stress world like ours, it is an invitation to indulge in all things slow, mindful, and natural. Try baking bread, plant lovely flowers on your patio, or take some time to knit or crochet outdoors. Even these small things can give you a little bit of the ‘escapism’ that Cottagecore encourages.

Free Pattern Friday – Midnight Top

Happy Free Pattern Friday!

Midnight Top in Cotton Supreme DK 718 and Cotton Gold 1097

Today’s free pattern is the Midnight Top, knit using Cotton Supreme DK and Cotton Gold held together. When I designed this top, my inspiration was twinkling stars in the night sky. I grew up in a wooded neighborhood with no street lights, so going out to look at the beautiful stars at night is a childhood memory I cherish, and one that I always find inspiring.

Cotton Supreme DK is a fantastic staple yarn for warm-weather projects. This 100% cotton yarn is easy to work with, buttery-soft, and perfect for the whole family. It works up into a fabric that has gorgeous drape and stitch definition, so we love using it for garment patterns like the Midnight Top. I chose the color 718 Black for this design.

Cotton Gold is a fancy yarn that works up into an ethereal, shimmering fabric. It looks lovely on its own for shawls or stoles that are perfect for an event, like the Golden Fans Shawl and the Phantom Shawlette. When carried along with another yarn, it adds some pizazz to an otherwise plain project. The thread base is made of cotton mixed with gold or silver glitter (depending on your color choice), and has small Payette sequins strung throughout that give this yarn its magical appearance. I chose the color 1097 for this design, which is Black with Silver sequins.

This pattern uses an eyelet stitch repeat, which creates lovely columns of knit stitches and eyelets, resulting in a stretchy, comfortable lace fabric you’ll be happy wearing all day long. If you’re intimidated by lace stitches, don’t fret! The pattern uses a three-stitch repeat, so it is incredibly easy to memorize as you go. Simple neckline shaping, and an identical front and back make this a very suitable project for the advanced beginner as well as more seasoned knitters.

I often think about the versatility of pieces I design. The Midnight Top is designed so that it works well for any outfit you choose. Style it with jeans or pants for a more casual look, or throw it over a dress for an evening out! Cotton Supreme DK also makes this piece suitable to be used as a swimsuit cover-up for days at the beach or pool. The fringe detail on the hemline adds just a bit of flair that makes dressing up or down even easier.

Design Spotlight: Wheel of Life in Deluxe DK Superwash and Penna

Confession: I’m a ‘Winter person’. Don’t get me wrong, Summer is great and all, but there is something about brisk days, warm beverages, and the cozy feeling of Winter that makes me happy. Plus, cold weather calls for great sweaters to knit and wear! Here at Universal Yarn, we have plenty of lovely winter appropriate yarns to choose from, but there is always fun in adding something new to the family. When we first received samples of Penna last year, I immediately fell in love.

Penna is a laceweight blend of 50% baby suri alpaca, 28% extra fine merino, and 22% nylon. This yarn feels like a little puff of cloud in your hands, and adds an ethereal quality to any project. The color palette we created for Penna spans both muted and saturated shades, and all carry a romantic, indulgent feeling well suited to the yarn. Penna works well on its own for loose and airy projects. When held together with another yarn, it adds texture and dimension, which is what I chose to do for Wheel of Life.

Deluxe DK Superwash is our 100% superwash wool DK weight yarn. A fantastic choice for garments and accessories for cool weather, this is a stash staple you’ll love working with. I chose matching colors of Deluxe DK Superwash and Penna for my Wheel of Life sweater, and they are held together throughout. The result is a hazy, buttery soft fabric that feels amazing to wear and keeps you warm.

Published in the Winter 2020 issue of Knitty , the Wheel of Life sweater was inspired by the cycle of life. Something that always stuck with me that I was told when I was younger is: the only inevitable thing in life is change, and you don’t want to get stuck in the wheel as it turns. We can all agree that 2020 was a year like no other, so I think going with the flow and accepting the changing tides of life is something I’m really willing to do in this new year. This sweater feels like a good way to embrace that.

When I first swatched the two yarns together, I was immediately taken by the idea of designing a sweater inspired by art. Something about the hazy texture of the yarns held together made me think of brush strokes in a painting. Visual symbolism in art is something that I have always been enthralled by. Painters use imagery of food and other ordinary objects to place meaning in their works, and we (the viewer) love dissecting the art and attempting to ‘figure out’ all of the hidden gems. I wanted to play with some symbolism in this sweater design, and tell a story with simple imagery in a colorwork pattern.

This sweater is knit from the bottom up in the round. The sleeves are worked separately, and joined with the body of the sweater at the yoke. I chose 828 Pulp (Deluxe) and 106 Eggshell (Penna) to be the background color, because Ivory is a classic Winter shade that anyone can wear. After you work the ribbed hem, you move into the lower colorwork section.

The fleur de lis represents the lily flower, which also symbolizes birth or the beginning of life. I chose the darkest colors, 846 Mulberry Heather (Deluxe), and 115 Dusk (Penna) for the fleur de lis and other parts of the colorwork so that they would really ‘lift off’ of the cream background. Above that, the design looks like the infinity symbol, or strands of DNA knit in colors 824 Starfish (Deluxe) and 111 Whisper (Penna). This represents the ‘wheel’ of life, always turning.

The yoke of the sweater features more colorwork pattern symbols. Stars are a fascinating thing. Our sun is considered an average size star in the universe, there are some 100 times bigger! It can take millions to billions of years for stars to die, and some explode when they do, creating a beautiful Supernova. I chose the moon and star design to represent death, because a Supernova is really a beautiful way to go. Thus completing our ‘cycle of life’ in the sweater.

My main goals to achieve with this free pattern were a graphic colorwork design that tells a story, and to showcase these very different yarns working together in harmony. I also wanted this to be a classic design that many people would love to wear. The color palette I chose is intentionally very soft, and a ‘classic’ combination of shades. I know the selection may not be for everyone, so I put together a few more color ideas for those of you who might like something different! Something about knitting that I absolutely love is the ability to take a pattern and choose colors of yarn that make it completely your own. Here are my selections below.

‘Tis The Season: Last Minute Gift Ideas

The holiday season is my personal favorite. The weather is crisp, people are cheerful, and cozy knitwear abounds! Though the holiday season is my favorite, it can also be very hectic. This year has been one like no other, and while everything feels topsy-turvy, it can be hard to figure out how to make the holidays feel special. I thought I’d share some last minute gift ideas that you can make and send off to your loved ones. There is truly nothing like a handmade gift to put a smile on someone’s face.

Accessories are always quicker projects that people love. Maybe a scarf they can cozy up in, or the perfect hat to throw on as they head out the door for work in the morning. Uptown Super Bulky is our 100% anti-pilling acrylic bulky weight yarn that is easy to care for and soft to wear.

Day 8 of Winter – Series 4 Edition

This is part 8 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, Series 4 Edition. Happy Day 8 of our 12 Days of Winter celebration! When I first started sketching up ideas for designs for this year’s kits, I knew I wanted to create a non-wearable project that would challenge me as a designer. Enter Coco, the loveable, snuggly bunny friend you can make up for someone you love (or for yourself).

Coco in Uptown Worsted 376 Umber, 303 Cream, 374 Beet, 324 Black

I love stuffed animals. Always have, always will. Although I don’t have anything close to a ‘collection’, the ones I do have all hold special meaning to me. Amigurumi are all the rage in the crochet world, but I wanted to knit up a larger stuffed animal that was ultra-snuggly. Uptown Worsted is our 100% anti-pilling acrylic yarn, and it was the obvious choice for Coco. Whether he is in little hands, a dog’s mouth, or just sitting on your desk (as he is mine now), Uptown Worsted is easy to care for and very soft. I chose colors for Coco that went with our palette for this year’s collection, and got to work!

Coco’s legs, arms, head, and ears are knit flat, while his body, the hat, and scarf are knit in the round. Little pom poms are made for his hat and tail, while his face is embroidered on as the final step. Small fringe are added to the scarf ends after seaming the tube together.

I wanted Coco to be very cute and be able to sit on his own, so his feet are far bigger than the rest of his legs. Uptown Worsted has some ‘stick’ to it, which makes for easy putting together of Coco’s pieces. While he has lots of shape, all you need to know how to do to make Coco is increase, decrease, knit in the round, and use mattress stitch.

Aren’t those floppy ears just irresistible? I just had to make them extra long. If you’re interested in how I embroidered Coco’s face, watch the video below! But feel free to make Coco your own, and embroider his face however you like! After all, he is your new buddy.

Day 7 of Winter – Series 4 Edition

This is part 7 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, Series 4 Edition.

It’s Day 7 of our 12 Days of Winter Kit Collection, and we’re over halfway there! Cables are a knitwear design staple for garments and accessories alike. I grew up in ballet lessons, so legwarmers were an essential item throughout my young years. In fact, they were the very first thing I knit! I’ve long left the pointe shoes life behind, but I was sparked with the idea to make some ultra-cute lounge legwarmers for this year’s kit collection.

The Forest Fir Legwarmers in Deluxe Worsted Superwash

The Forest Fir legwarmers are knit using Deluxe Worsted Superwash. The machine washable version of our Deluxe Worsted yarn is made of 100% superwash wool. It is available in a broad color palette, and will always keep you warm! The Forest Fir legwarmers are knit in the round, worked from the bottom up. An interlocking cable pattern decorates the front, while the back is reverse stockinette stitch. I imagine I’d wear these legwarmers while watching movies with my family during the holidays.

Once you reach the top, you work a row of eyelets, and then the final ribbing. Deluxe Worsted Superwash has excellent stitch definition, so all of your hard work is sure to shine! After your legwarmers are done, you will proceed to making the I-Cord tie. I wanted to design this feature not only to look very cute, but also for function! The tie helps them stay up on your leg, just like very old school socks had.

If you’ve never worked an I-Cord before, don’t fret! It has a bit of ‘magic’ to it, but it is a really simple process. Just watch the video below, and I’ll guide you through the process step by step.

Day 3 of Winter – Series 4 Edition

This is part 3 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, Series 4 Edition.

Warm, neutral colors are essentials in my wardrobe, especially for Winter. I find those warm tones make the typically gray weather feel brighter, and they also tend to be flattering on all. I wanted to design a matching hat and scarf set for the 12 Days of Winter kits this year that felt elegant and still fun. Looking at colors of our Adore yarn, I was immediately struck by the combination of Sand (129) and Powder (104), and how it reminded me of my favorite winter beverage. So I designed the Chai Latte Set!

I’m a spicy food girl. The hotter the better, and one cuisine I adore is Indian. The depth of flavor, richness of the food, and variety always appeal to me. This decadence in spice doesn’t just apply to food in India, it also applies to beverages. A warm chai latte, to me, is like the essence of winter time. Delicious spices meld with tea and milk to make a cozy drink I cannot live without. Below, you’ll find a recipe for a homemade chai latte that is sure to warm you up during the cold months!

Makes about 4 mugs of Chai

What you need:

cinnamon sticks – 2-3
cardamom pods (whole)- about 8
4 whole cloves
1 star anise
sliced ginger – 1 piece
3 black tea bags – Assam or English Breakfast tea works well
Your milk of choice
1 tablespoon of brown sugar

Using a dry skillet, toast the spices until they are fragrant, watching them carefully so they do not burn.
Add the spices, ginger, and tea bags to a small pot with 4 cups of filtered boiled water, and leave to infuse for approx. 10 mins (or longer if you want it strong).
Heat milk with brown sugar and stir. Once the sugar is dissolved, use a milk frother or whisk to lightly foam the milk.
To serve, use a strainer to strain the spices, ginger, and tea bags from the tea. Add the sugared milk, leaving the froth. Stir to combine. Finally, spoon the froth on top and you are ready to enjoy!

Once you’ve made yourself a nice mug of Chai, sit down with the Chai Latte Set kit and get to knitting! Adore is a blend of superwash fine merino and acrylic. It is a super-soft yarn, with a saturated and varied color palette. I ‘adore’ Adore, because it really is a luxurious yarn in a very affordable skein. Plus, it is easy to care for, so it makes an excellent choice for garments and accessories that will be worn often.

Day 2 of Winter – Series 4 Edition

This is part 2 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, Series 4 Edition.

It’s Day 2 of our 12 Days of Winter Kit Collection! When I think of winter (my favorite season), I immediately think of the beautiful, quiet feeling when snow is falling. I have always loved snow, and just the sort of magical feeling it brings. Snow brings nostalgia with it as well; memories of making snowmen and sledding in the neighborhood with my sister when I was growing up.

The details of individual snowflakes is always something that has fascinated me as well. They look like tiny gemstones! I’ve often imagined I’d eventually move to a place where it snowed all the time, but alas, here in Charlotte, we maybe see snow once or twice a year. I love Charlotte for many reasons, so I’ll deal with the lack of snow.

That feeling of a quiet snowfall was my inspiration for the Day 2 of Winter kit, the Falling Snow cowl. Large cowls are a great winter knit project. You can wear them with anything, and their classic look works well for everyone regardless of your personal style. Our Deluxe Worsted yarn is a no-brainer for winter projects. It is 100% wool, always keeps you warm, and comes in lovely colorways for the winter season. This as a base for the project was perfect, but it needed a little something more.

That something more needed to be Penna. Penna is one of our newest yarns, and one of my absolute favorites. It is a lace weight blend of baby suri alpaca, merino, and nylon. The nylon gives strength, where the alpaca provides a fluffy, soft halo that gives an ethereal quality to projects. I chose to work the Falling Snow cowl with the two yarns held together throughout, which gives dimension to the gray tones, and that lovely halo reminds me of fresh snow on the ground. The lace pattern is reminiscent of snowflakes sprinkled all over the cowl.

This kit would make a great gift for a beginner knitter looking to grow their skills knitting lace. Since it is an all over repeat, you can really get the hang of working a lace pattern.
