Meet a Local Yarn Shop – Darn Knit Anyway

From a sandwich board full of inspirational quotes to a shop full of friendly fibers, say hello to Darn Knit Anyway! We are very excited about this month’s local yarn shop feature, and you should be too! Located in Stillwater, MN, this incredible shop is just minutes from the Wisconsin border and Minnesota’s largest city, Minneapolis. Let’s learn more about Aimee and her sensational store!

Aimee Pelletier owns Darn Knit Anyway, but that wasn’t always the case. Commercial interior design was her previous occupation, but all it took was a drive by a storefront available for leasing, and everything changed. Four months later, her yarn shop opened up and has been operating for fourteen years!

Below you will see the Maker’s Lounge, a space that Aimee created in 2022 just for her customers. This space is open whenever the shop is open and is a great way that Darn Knit Anyway is fostering a community around their shop.

We all know Minnesota is known for very cold winters, so it came as no surprise to us to hear that some of the most popular yarns at Darn Knit Anyway are our warm and cozy offerings! As seen below, shop owner Aimee is holding a woolly gnome created with super bulky Be Wool. Plus, who can forget Uptown Worsted! This versatile yarn is on the shelves of many of our shops across the country, including Darn Knit Anyway!

Kits are another hot commodity at Darn Knit Anyway, especially the Easy Does It Winter, featuring Creative Melange Chunky from Rico Design. This soft yarn is self-shading, so the beautiful colors will come to life as you knit!

Free Pattern Friday – Embers Hat

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Embers Hat in Be Wool and Be Wool Multi (pattern link here).

So how about it? Done with all your gift knitting this year? I’m not – I still have a single requested Towanda Sock to go. But there’s still time to squeeze in some quick handmade projects, when you choose those projects carefully!

The Embers Hat ticks all my boxes for a quick gift.

Thick yarn
Looks harder than it is (got to impress the recipient!)
Fun pom pom. I’m a sucker for a pom pom!

Thick yarn? Check! Solid Be Wool and its color-flecked sibling Be Wool Multis are a perfect matching pair. Each is a thick, soft wool/acrylic blend that works up lightning-fast.

You’ll cast on with US Size 15 (10 mm) 16″ circular for the 2×2 ribbed brim, then move to US Size 17 (12 mm) needles for the body of the hat.

The Fair Isle diamonds pattern is simple enough. The use of multi-colored yarn creates a more syncopated rhythm to the color than straight solid-on-solid, although you could certainly use a coordinating Be Wool color in place of the Multis. I’m wondering how 109 Tango, a rich red, would look!

Pom pom? Check! And I do love how Be Wool Multis creates a variegated topper without any extra work on the crafter’s part. It’s literally the crowning touch!

Free Pattern Friday – The Kobuk Cowl

Today, the Kobuk Cowl (pattern link here).

This is a fun and fast project that you can work up in a matter of hours! Using our super chunky Be Wool and Be Wool Multis always leads to full, soft, and quick work.

I recommend this as a great beginner crochet project! This cowl features V stitches, and a faux ribbing created using front and back post work. If you haven’t tried these stitch techniques a go before, definitely jump in. They are easy-peasy but look somewhat complex. It will be sure to have your friends asking the fun question “Oh my gosh, did you make that!?”

The Kobuk Cowl is named after the Kobuk Valley National Park in Alaska. The natural colors featured in this design reminded us of the cool blue waters, arctic chill, and rusted golden landscape seen in this majestic place. The second I tried in on I, was itching for some colder weather adventure. Granted, I may not make it all the way to Alaska this season, but I’ll be dreaming about it when I hike around the beautiful mountains in North Carolina!

Day 10 of Winter – Series 4 Edition

This is part 10 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, Series 4 Edition.

It’s Day 10 of the 12 Days of Winter Kit Collection, Series 4! Today is all about a nice throw to keep you warm and cozy all winter long. Say hello to the Lantern Throw. If snuggling up under a thick blanket with a cup of cocoa and a good book sounds like the perfect winter evening, you won’t want to miss this plush project!

The generous size of this blanket is perfect for sharing and is sure to cover your toes.

Chunky projects seem to be all the rage, and it’s no wonder, because projects made with super-bulky yarn work up satisfyingly fast. That’s certainly the case with the Lantern Throw. Blanket projects, even when knitting with worsted weight yarn, can be a big undertaking with progress that feels somewhat slow. However, add in some nice, thick yarn and it’s as though you’ve hit fast-forward. That’s why I chose to use Be Wool for this design. I love just that you can get such a large blanket out of less yarn than it takes to make most sweaters.

Snuggle up to this cozy blanket – it’s irresistable!

Be Wool is a super soft, bouncy blend of 60% acrylic and 40% wool. It’s perfect for homewares because it’s machine-washable and easy to care for. We suggest US Size 17 (12 mm) needles for this yarn in order to create a fabric that isn’t too dense and has just the right amount of drape without sacrificing structure.

Chunky braided cables add to the beauty of this otherwise simple design.

The Lantern Throw is decorated with oversized cables throughout. The specific type of cables are Braided Cables in a motif in which each cable mirrors another. If you haven’t knit braided cables before, or if you are completely new to cable knitting, fear not because I’ve got your back. I’ve created a thorough tutorial where I show you exactly how to knit the cables used in this pattern.

Comfort Crafts

You know the old Serenity Prayer?

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.”

It seems lately like there are a lot of things that fall under the “things I cannot change” heading. If you’ve already voted, and you’re following best COVID practices, and are generally doing the things that are within your power to take care of others, this is your moment to remember to take care of yourself, too. And as crafters, one of the ways we can do that is by sitting down and picking up our yarn and tools.

With that in mind, we have some recommendations for “comfort crafts.” These are projects that are big, fluffy, mindless, or some combination of the three. And to further keep stress at bay, they’re all free patterns.

The Wickerwork Blanket knit in Bella Chenille Big

Looks super cozy, doesn’t it? Well, it is. Here’s our Creative Lead Rachel Brockman wrapping herself up like a human burrito in this blanket and the Mosaic Cowl, also in Bella Chenille Big.

I’m not entirely sure Rachel would be thrilled with this picture being posted, but she’s off at a photo shoot and can’t object. As long as you don’t tell her, it’s all fine.

This may look like an enormous project, but it’s knit in Bella Chenille Big on US 15 (10mm) needles, so it goes faster than you think. Plus you have the advantage of being able to snuggle under it while you’re making it! 2. The Choux Cowl knit in Alaska

Honestly, Alaska is soothing just to touch. It’s one of those yarns that you find yourself stroking like it’s a tribble. And because of its construction, it’s surprisingly light and warm.

The Choux Cowl is worked as a tube in the round, with columns of slip stitch on the even rows making the plaid effect. The pattern provides options for seamed and seamless finishing. If you’re a crocheter who wants to use this yarn, may we suggest… 3. March Fog crocheted in Alaska

This sample took pretty much exactly two balls each of 902 Peach Puff and 905 Stormy. If you plan on making this any bigger, we’d recommend grabbing an extra ball of each color.

This is a light and lofty stole that would work equally well as a scarf. Its two row repeat is easy to memorize, for a great dose of calming crochet. 4. The Behemoth Scarf in Revolutions

Big? Check. Soft? Check. Easy? Check! Revolutions is a unique blend of fibers with a soft halo (thanks to the mohair and alpaca included). Each ball (wheel? roll?) includes four colors in stripes that go together beautifully.

Work the four-row shell pattern lengthwise. If you want to shorten your scarf, just subtract 10 from the stitch count. Easy peasy. 5. The Dappled Shawl knit in Be Wool

Big, squishable Be Wool is one of our newer yarns, and it’s proven to be a popular one. No wonder, when you can make projects like this so quickly!

If you want to try your first shawl, this is a great beginner project. If you’re an old pro, this will feel like coming home. Either way, on US size 17 (12mm) needles, it’s the definition of “instant gratification” comfort knits.

These are just a start. We’re sure you have some go-to projects that are favorites, and we’d love to hear about them. So make yourself some coffee-maker apple cider (works great in a crock pot, too) and settle in. Breathe, let go of stress, and enjoy the work of your hands. Happy crafting.
