Holiday Helper – December is here!

How’s the holiday knitting going? I’m doing better than expected – I found this glittering little gem on our shelves here yesterday and am happily knitting a quick one-ball scarf. The yarn is Classic Shades Metallic (175yds/100g) and the color is 607 Zenith. When I saw the red and green accented by silver, I knew it would make the perfect holiday project. This scarf couldn’t be any more Christmasy unless Santa Claus himself knitted it using two candy canes.

The pattern is a scaled-down version of this free three-ball Classic Shades Shawl pattern by Olga Tonjes. She also provides instructions for working just one section (as I’m doing in the picture above), making this a great project to adapt if you’re really backed up on your holiday knitting.

Classic Shades Metallic is interchangeable with customer favorite Classic Shades, but with an extra strand of glitter running through it, making it perfect for gifts that you really want to stand out.

I’ve got another couple of balls of Classic Shades Metallic sitting beside me right now – this scarf is going quickly, and I’ll definitely have time to knock out another gift. This time, I think I’ll work up the Longways Linen Scarf. On size 9 needles with a basic two row pattern repeat, it ought to go quickly. I’ll make it through the holidays yet!

Holiday Helper – Quick Cowls

Breathe in… breathe out… knit one… purl two…

Everybody calm? Good. Let’s stay relaxed, because there’s still plenty of time to knit some lovely gifts for the holidays. This week, let’s focus on quick and chunky knits. Fortunately, we have an entire free e-book devoted to exactly this kind of pattern.

Quick Cowls collects five patterns in bulky weight yarns that look good and work up quickly.

The Get To the Point Cowl in Classic Shades Frenzy is always popular when we send it out for trunk shows. In fact, it’s on the road again this month for a showing at Bourgee Boutique in Claremont, CA. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and see it. Variegated Classic Shades Frenzy does the heavy lifting in making a striking design. Just one ball on US Size 11 (8mm) needles does the trick.

The Ethereal Lace Cowl is a lovely soft lace pattern that gets you a lot of bang for your buck. One ball of Mohair Mountain (660yds per ball) will make five cowls on US Size 11 (8mm) needles. That’s a lot of gifts from just one ball. The pattern is both written and charted, so pick whatever you’re comfortable with.

The Everyone Likes Stripes cowl is another that knits up quickly on size 11 (8mm) needles. With more than 120 colors of the called-for Deluxe Chunky 100% wool, this is a very easy piece to customize for your giftee. This is also one that I would have to put away after knitting because otherwise I’d keep it for myself.

Hairpin! This technique isn’t used as often as it should be! The Hairpin Lace Cowl uses one skein of Bamboo Bloom Handpaints for the vibrant variegated stripes and one skein of Deluxe Chunky for the solid center and edge. Unusual and beautiful.

Finally, the Lava Flow Cowl uses just one skein of Superwool on size 17 needles. We call it Superwool because it’s super stretchy. This is a warm and soft cowl with a lot of “sproing” to it. I’ve made this one myself – it’s a very fast and satisfying knit.

Free Pattern Friday – Cog Shawlette

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, something big and beautiful – the Cog Shawlette.

This fun accessory takes two balls of Classic Shades Big Time (color 801 Reef), the super-bulky big sister to self-shading Classic Shades. The pattern takes its name from the unique curved gear-like edging. Big yarn means quick knits, so we took the opportunity to work up a few different shawlettes to see how it looked in other colors. Answer: great!

From the pattern: “This shawlette is worked in one piece. First the Cog Edging is knit sideways. Without breaking yarn, crochet slip stitches are then worked all the way along the shaped side of the Cog Edging. Without breaking yarn, stitches are then picked up and knit along the straight side of the Cog Edging and the Shawl body is worked up and shaped with short-rows.”

Sequins and Shading

We’re in an off week with our usual every-other Wednesday Weaving schedule. But Denise over at Schacht posted a really terrific article on weaving with shading yarn, in particular, our Classic Shades Sequins Lite, and I couldn’t resist sharing.

You may remember our very first Weaving Wednesday post a few months ago where I did a scarf in Sequins Lite. But what I didn’t talk about was how to wind your shuttles for weaving. Be sure to check out Denise’s post to find out how.

Free Pattern Friday – Back to School Backpack

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Are you ready for school? Me neither! But the Back To School Backpack is a reminder that it’s time to gear up for Fall.

I love the combination of self-shading yarn with a solid Deluxe Worsted Superwash accent and tie. The entire backpack is worked in one piece. Begin by knitting the back piece from the center out. Next, work the side and bottom sideways and attach to the back piece as you go. Stitches for the front piece are worked from the outside in. Voila! A minimum of seaming!

This design is made in our brand new Classic Shades Metallic (175yds/100g). When I say “brand new,” I mean that we literally just got our first shipment from the mill a few minutes ago. Classic Shades Metallic has the gorgeous self-shading tones and sheen of Classic Shades, plus metallic thread for extra bling.

Now that it’s arrived, there goes my productivity for the day.

Free Pattern Friday – Little Boy’s Bomber Cap

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Little Boy’s Bomber Cap in Classic Shades.

Yesterday’s self-shading scarf and hat in Poems got us thinking of other self-shading projects! This adorable kid’s hat is worked flat on straight needles using Classic Shades, a self-shading wool/acrylic blend. With 197 yards to a skein of Classic Shades, this is easily a one-ball project with plenty left over.

The bomber cap is also part of Classic Shades Kids, a book of toddler and kid projects featuring Classic Shades. We just had to set this project free for everybody to try. Isn’t it fascinating how a colorful yarn selection can change the entire look of a project?

I’m already thinking about how this hat would look in different colors. Jeweltones? Neons? Hmmm…

Throwback Thursday – Bohemian Hat and Scarf

It’s Throwback Thursday!

Today, the Bohemian Hat and Scarf set in Poems!

This is a pattern near and dear to my heart. When a friend overseas (hi, Cheryl!) wanted to learn to knit, I made her a care package of this pattern, US size 8 (5mm) circular needles, and enough Poems 100% wool to make the set. I wanted her to learn on a good quality yarn, and in my experience, self-shading yarn is a special treat for a beginning knitter. It’s something about the anticipation of seeing what color is going to come next that motivates a newer knitter to keep going, even through any frustration or mistakes.

The scarf is an incredibly easy starting point into the world of knitting. Cast on 220 stitches, knit every row, then cast off. Boom, you’ve made a beautiful striped scarf. From there, it’s not a great leap in skills to be able to make the hat and you’re ready to step out in style.

This would be a great set for Classic Shades wool/acrylic blend, as well. The yardage on Classic Shades is excellent, making it another great choice for the beginning knitter who wants to dive in to a colorful project.

Cheryl’s still knitting, having moved on to shawls and other more advanced projects. Next I need to send this pattern and some Poems to another friend in New England. I’m converting all my friends into knitters, one ball of yarn at a time!

Sunday Swatch – Classic Shades

Today’s Sunday Swatch is in Classic Shades (197yds/100g).

Above, the start of a basic multi-directional scarf on size 8 needles in the founding member of our Classic Shades family of yarns. Classic Shades is a wildly popular yarn, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s got a very affordable price for its generous 197 yards – three balls easily makes Yumiko Alexander’s stunning Arizona Sunset cowl, double-wrapped in the picture at right.

Classic Shades is an acrylic/wool blend in a silky soft single. Durable and machine washable, it’s a great choice for those wanting a self-shading yarn with knockout color.

Sunday Swatch – Classic Shades Big Time

Today’s Sunday Swatch is in Classic Shades Big Time.

Classic Shades Big Time is part of our popular Classic Shades family of yarns. As the name implies, it’s the same wool/acrylic blend as Classic Shades, but BIG. These were knit on a US size 11(8mm) needle, and you could easily go up to a US13.

Although this is a bulky yarn, the pattern is actually taken from the scrap sock yarn blanket at Luann’s Loose Threads. Cast on 31 and follow the instructions for a single mitered square.

I had planned to do just one, but it went so fast I wanted to keep going!

To hook two squares together as in the larger picture above, I finished one square and left my last stitch (upper right purple corner in the picture at right) on the needle, then did an e-loop cast on of an additional 15 stitches. I knitted back across the stitches I had cast on, then picked up and knitted 15 stitches along the edge of the square I had just finished. With 31 stitches on the needle I followed the directions for another square. It would have been just as easy to line up the direction that the rows went by binding off that final stitch, then picking up along a different edge and starting a new square.

There are a lot of applications for these mitered squares. Can’t you imagine a row of these for a scarf, or several strips or blocks for an afghan? The color changes would be striking! One 150g ball of Classic Shades Big Time will make five 6 1/2″ square blocks on a size 11 needle.
