Free Pattern Friday – Which Way is Up

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, Which Way Is Up in Bella Cash.

Ladies and gentlemen, the faint of heart may wish to look away from this next sentence, lest it chill you to your very soul!

We’re more than halfway to Christmas.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I know.  I’m sorry you had to read that.

But better to face it now, while there’s still plenty of time to start on holiday projects than later, when it’s a mad rush.

Fortunately, we’ve got some charming projects in the works that would be great for gifts, like this week’s pattern, Which Way is Up.  Sized from newborn to 4-year, it’s a Fair Isle cardigan that calls for machine washable Bella Cash, a fine merino/cashmere/nylon blend. Knit the cardi bottom up, join the raglan sleeves and body, and add the button band.  Classic and cute.

This would be a good small project to tackle to get ahead of the game, or just to be ready when the next baby shower takes you by surprise.

We hope you enjoy this stylish and adorable pattern.

Happy knitting!

Free Pattern Friday – Diamonds are High

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Diamonds are High 1rear blog

Today, Diamonds are High in Deluxe Bulky Superwash.

Earlier this week I posted two thick and quick scarf projects in our new yarn, Deluxe Bulky Superwash (100g/87yds).  The more I handled this yarn, the more I wanted to make something with it myself.  So here it is – Diamonds are High.

Diamonds are High 2 blogThis Fair Isle hat is knit on size 11 needles at a little under 4 stitches per inch.  To keep the ribbed brim from flaring, as can sometimes an issue, increase the number of stitches just after the k1p1 section. As long as your tension is good in the diamond sections, this is a nice, stretchy hat.

Credit where it’s due: I brought the hat to Amy Gunderson and said, “this needs something, but I don’t know what.”  It was she who suggested “big pompom” and she was 100% right.  It really takes it over the top, so to speak.

This might be someone’s gift, but then again, it might stay with me.  Nothing brightens your day like a colorful hat with a giant puffball on the top.  Although after making this hat, I’m pretty sure I have enough for a second one with the colors reversed.  I could make a gift and keep one for me.  It’s the best of all worlds!

Happy knitting!

Free Pattern Friday – Coffee Beans and Sugar Cubes

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Uptown Bulky Two Hats_blog

Today, Coffee Beans and Sugar Cubes.

Two hats that can be completed with one ball of each color of Uptown Bulky 100% anti-pilling acrylic (100g/87yds).  Cute!  Knit on  size 11 needles, these go quickly and are a good way to practice your Fair Isle.

I’m loving the color, too.  That Uptown Bulky 416 Iron coordinates well with 421, Coral.  The coral is at the forefront of style at the moment – Sherwin Williams just picked Coral Reef as their color of the year.  Pretty!

We hope you enjoy this satisfying quick project. Happy knitting!

Free Pattern Friday – Starglow Ski Cap

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Starglow Ski Cap in Little Bird

Today, we share the Starglow Ski Cap in Little Bird.  Little Bird is a smooth and soft 100% acrylic perfect for kid designs like this Fair Isle hat.  We love the border around the brim that coordinates with the tassels!

This free pattern is one we’ve waited a little while to share.  The one color of Little Bird we had not yet received from our mill was gray.  Yesterday, we received it (and a lot of other goodies).  For this pattern, the lack of one color could be a problem, but it’s also an opportunity for reflection.

Often when we see a pattern made up, we only want it in the color shown.  And that’s fine – sometimes, we just fall in love with something exactly as it is.  But sometimes, it’s healthy to stretch our imaginations and see it in other ways.  What would you do to make this pattern your own?

Sunday Swatch – Merino XF Superwash

Merino XF Superwash

Universal has a project in the works that has the knitters in the office wanting to brush up our skills a little, so today seemed like a good day to practice Fair Isle.

Today’s Sunday Swatch is in Merino XF Superwash on US Size 7 (4.5mm) needles. Amy Gunderson whipped up a little heart chart for Valentine’s Day and we just couldn’t resist giving it a try. Cute!
