12 Days of Winter – Series 6 Edition, Part I

This is part 1 in a four-part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, Series 6 Edition.

No matter which holiday you celebrate, winter is filled with gift giving of all kinds. Each year, our design team comes together to envision what projects will embody the spirit of the season, and creates kits that are exclusively sold at Local Yarn Shops. For this 12 Days of Winter, it’s all about bright and festive cheer! From the twinkling of snow and lights, to the bold colors of candies and toys, 2022 is a year for joy.

Today, I’m going to highlight the first three days from the 12 Days of Winter – Series 6, which you can find, or order via drop shipping, at any Local Yarn Shop that carries Universal Yarn. The Partridge Cowl, Candy Cane Lane hat, and Swiss Meringue Slippers each have special and thoughtful details that will delight knitters and gift recipients alike.

The Partridge Cowl is a beautifully colorful piece, designed by Rachel Brockman. It’s knit seamlessly in the round and uses stranded colorwork throughout. Since you are working with multiple colors of yarn throughout the whole project, we have labeled the difficulty as intermediate, and we have a blog post to help you navigate this technique at this link. It begins with a provisional cast-on which is unraveled and then grafted to the opposite end with the Kitchener stitch for a true seamless look when finished. The yarn in this kit is Rico Design Baby Dream DK Uni, paired with Rico Design Baby Dream DK. Both the solid and multi versions of this yarn are made of 50% polyacrylic and 50% polyamide, making for an ultra-soft cowl that’s perfect for bundling up this winter.

My favorite part about this design is how the birds alternate their direction throughout the cowl. They were described as “dancing” in one of our newsletters, and I fell in love! Every time I see them now, I start humming the classic Christmas carol and envision the detailing near their beaks as notes of a birdsong twinkling to life.

Candy Cane Lane, by Rachel Brockman, is a jovial hat featuring a quintessential Candy Cane design, with a peppermint swirl at its crown. It’s knit in the round from the bottom up and uses stranded colorwork to create the swirls and motif. Made with just two balls of Fibra Natura Donnina (100% superwash merino wool), this sweet and smaller kit makes a wonderful stocking stuffer for a loved one, or a fun, compact WIP for holiday travels.

Hats are such a wonderful seasonal accessory – especially when you get to tell people “Thanks, I made it myself!” With the bold contrast of the red and white colors, the Candy Cane Lane hat is a head-turner, so get those compliment responses ready!

Last, but not least, we have the Swiss Meringue Slippers, by Aubrey Busek. These snuggle-worthy slipper boots are worked flat in two parts, first the foot, and next the cuff, which is sewn on later. Some of the seaming involves using the Mattress Stitch, which we have a handy blog tutorial for, found at this link! Buttons of your choice are added after seaming, for the final touch of winter cheer. Three colors of Universal Yarn Deluxe DK Superwash are used in alternating stripes with subtle detailing to create a rich texture on the feet, while swirled cables dance up the cuffs. It’s a great project for those who want a colorful piece, without doing stranded colorwork, as these slippers feature a mosaic colorwork technique where you only use one color at a time. The 100% superwash wool makes for plush, yet durable slippers for season-long wear.

Booties, as I like to call them, are an absolute must-have for cold weather comfort. The colors are fantastic, making them as dazzling and decadent as the cookie puffs they’re named for. This project is a wonderful take on the normal “Holiday Classics,” and I will shamelessly be working on this kit for myself before I even think about their gift-giving appeal!

Tiny Textures: Knit Projects For Littles Ones

This week we released our newest collection, Tiny Textures, which is truly the cutest little gathering of knitwear items I’ve seen all spring! There are five easy projects to knit up and give to a baby or toddler in your life – whether for your own munchkins, or as a gift for others in your life, each design is sure to be a cherished keepsake for years to come.

All of the projects are made with our Uptown Worsted Hues yarn. It’s the newest addition to the Uptown line of yarns, featuring beautifully blended pastel colors that look great in any piece! From baby items, to adult garments, accessories, and homewares, this yarn is a wonderful way to bring a burst of color into the mix. Uptown Worsted Hues anti-pilling, 100% acrylic composition and Standard 100 certification by Oeko-Tex made this yarn an easy choice for a kids collection though. It can handle the rough-and-tumble nature of kiddos well, as it is fully machine washable and easy to care for.

One of my favorite pieces to come out of this collection is the Peyton cardigan. It has such a playful take on a sophisticated “grown up cardigan” by featuring squiggly lines, made of cable cross stitches, where one may expect to see more typical cables. Plus there’s room for more unexpected fun by incorporating buttons! You may choose to go with a clean look by using cohesive, round wooden buttons from Katrinkles, like we did. Or you could get quirky by browsing some of her more eccentric options, or by sourcing some from wherever you’d like! No matter where they are from, buttons are always a great way to make a piece feel truly unique and special.

The other teeny temptation creeping onto my make-list is the Elouise set. The hat and cowl have sweet little details that make them look quite polished for being so small. The hat features a little cinched gathering at the brim that hints at old-glam style, while the cowl sports a button closure, leaving room for more of that individual refinement we talked about above. The slip stitch pattern worked on both the hat and cowl has just the right amount of texture to give this set a certain je ne sais quoi that would simply lack if it were done in a smooth stockinette. Wouldn’t you agree?

Free Pattern Friday – Café Cable Set

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the one-ball Café Cable Set knitted in Colorburst (pattern link here).

In knitting, I am all about the accessories, and I love a classic cabled piece!

Today’s free pattern is right up my alley. Designer Aubrey Busek designed this easy set, with simple lines, in self-shading Colorburst. This would be a great pattern for a beginning cable knitter, or for someone who wants to learn.

It features a 2×2 right cross, worked flat for the scarf and in the round for the hat. A neat 2×2 ribbing edges the hat, and there is garter stitch edging on the scarf to help keep it from curling. I wouldn’t expect less from an Aubrey design, though – she’s all about the little touches that make a pattern perfect.

Speaking of little touches, that pom-pom! I love how many tones it picks up when you make a cute little pom-pom in a multicolored yarn like Colorburst. And can we talk about Colorburst?

With its huge 660 yard ball and long runs of color, Colorburst is the perfect self-shading yarn for colorful projects, without a lot of fiddly ends to weave in. Rich and saturated, there are pastels, neutrals, and bright jeweltones to choose from.

Here, the Café Cable Set is shown in 118 Baltic. The entire set took just one ball! Looove!

Collection Spotlight: Cozy Utility

So far, this winter has been absolutely perfect for knitting. Even in the south, we’ve had some wintry weather, and throughout the nation, there is more to come. So – are you staying warm? Are you staying…cozy? Well – if not, our latest pattern collection is sure to keep you both warm and cozy. Say “hello” to Cozy Utility!

Today, I’m going to highlight some of my favorite features of each design in the Cozy Utility collection. Whether you’re looking for a comfy cardigan, warm shawl, or soft stole – we have you covered. Each piece in this collection features our gorgeous Posh Alpaca yarn. This gently spun roving yarn blends wool, superfine alpaca, and acrylic to create a yarn that is light, lofty, and supremely warm. Upon its Fall 2021 release into the Universal Yarn line, Posh Alpaca became a fast favorite. And it’s no wonder – as you’ll see in the patterns I’m about to share, this yarn makes everything from soothing stockinette stitch to dense cables look absolutely amazing. Let’s take a look!

First up: the Asher Set. Matching sets are everywhere, and when designer Aubrey Busek dreamt up the mood board for this collection, this concept along with two-mile wear was on her mind. Who doesn’t love some crisp coordination, after all? It’s an irresistible hat and shawl duo. I love the clever construction and unique shape of the shawl. You simply work two right triangles in two separate colors – both drenched in a beautiful textural motif. Then, join them together at the cast-on edge. The result is a color-blocked, diamond-esque shaped shawl that’s perfect for wrapping around your neck and shoulders. Aubrey gave this piece special attention to detail as she even chose to color block the crochet edging along the edges of the shawl. I told you it’s clever!

Aren’t the contrasting wings just beautiful?

I said this was a matching set, though – so let’s not give all of the attention to the shawl. Asher features a complimentary beanie complete with a pom pom. What’s not to love? When you’re ready to transition from home to the local cafe, or simply out on a snowy walk, tuck the shawl around your neck and pop on the cap. You’re ready to go. The hat begins with a contrasting ribbed brim and quickly turns to the diamond motif from the shawl. A background of reverse Stockinette stitch on both pieces truly makes the patterns pop.

You can wear the hat slightly slouchy, as pictured above, or close to your head for a more snug fit.

Next, we have one of my proudest designs to date: Corbin. Here at Universal Yarn, we strive to produce plenty of inspiring designs to support each of our yarns. Of course, we’re a small team and wear many hats, so occasionally it can be challenging to find the time to genuinely play with design. (Yes, you’re getting a behind-the-scenes confession.) I truly let my creativity flow with Corbin. It’s a statement piece complete with traveling cables that wind through the design. Because of its large motif, this pattern is primarily charted. However, the charts aren’t overwhelming thanks to the large gauge of Posh Alpaca. The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down – a construction adored by many.

The cables in Corbin are featured on the sleeves, front, and back.

Another matching set in the collection, I included a coordinating cowl to take Corbin from warm and comfortable to supremely cozy. You’ll ward off the breeze with ease when you take this piece on the go. The cables in the cowl mimic the center front motif on the pullover. The fabric is double-thick, but you could easily work just one vertical repeat of the motif for a more lightweight piece.

Wear the cowl as a standalone accessory, or partner it with the pullover to elevate the design to the next level.

My other contribution to the collection is Evi. Crochet granny squares are everywhere. Although the classic motifs have traditionally been used for blankets, in the past year we’ve seen them more and more in garments and accessories. It’s a trend I don’t see going anywhere soon, and thank goodness for that. With Evi, I wanted to make a modern, high-contrast piece. Bold stripes alternate with granny squares in this partially-modular design. Night and day, colors #101 Birch and #106 Blacksmith complement each other perfectly and will never go out of style. But there are plenty of gorgeous colors in the palette to make your own. Just imagine this as an autumnal version reminiscent of fall foliage, using a combination such as #102 Oak and #108 Velveteen.

Evi is a striking project well-suited for beginners and advanced crocheters alike.

One of my favorite pieces from Cozy Utility is Hadley, designed by Aubrey Busek. Featuring soft bishop sleeves, knit-purl texture, and bountiful bobbles, this open and cushy cardigan will make you feel so relaxed. This is the type of piece that is easy to dress up or wear more casually. On those unexpectedly warm days, it can serve as a jacket all on its own. Knit flat in pieces and seamed, Hadley has just the right amount of structure to ensure longevity. This is a piece to last a lifetime.

Hadley features an optional, removable belt.

Finally, we have a show-stopping cardigan designed by the talented Melissa Leapman. Miranda is a richly cabled design featuring braided cables, cushiony K1, P1 Ribbed edgings, and pockets. Who doesn’t love pockets? The tunic length makes this piece almost robe-like, and like Hadley, it works fantastically as an outerwear piece. Set-in sleeves provide a perfect fit.

The cables in Miranda are framed with Double Seed Stitch – a classic complement to cables.

We simply adore this fresh collection and hope you do, too. Whether you’re a lover of garments or accessories, there is something for you. Free Pattern Friday – Baby Bloom Set

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Baby Bloom Set in Bella C a sh (pattern link here).

There’s just one word to describe this pattern – adorabobble!

You can see why – these sweet little clusters of fun that adorn the sweater hem and the brim of the hat. They’re like sweet little flower buds ready to bloom!

Designer Rachel Brockman used Bella Cash for this design. It’s one of our favorite yarns for… well, for everything, but especially for baby and child garments. The cashmere content makes it irresistibly soft, and the machine washability means it’s practical for the most adventurous little tyke.

Sized from 3-6 up to 24 months, this sweet little set takes 2-3 balls of Bella Cash for the cardigan, and just one for the hat.

This set is almost as cute as the baby you’ll make it for!

Free Pattern Friday – Moor Hat

This week, a clever, reversible design from Rachel Brockman!

As a nature lover, Rachel took her design cue from the great outdoors. Inspired by the mossy, grassy vegetation of moorland habitats, the Moor Hat is cushiony, warm, and versatile. Deluxe DK Tweed Superwash is a fitting choice of yarn. Its tweedy flecks of color fit the natural vibe of this pattern.

Day 11 of Winter – Series 5 Edition

This is part 11 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from the 12 Days of Winter Kit Collection, Series 5.

Delicious seasonal foods are one of my favorite things about winter. From mulled wine to pot pies, most of my favorite things to eat are perfect for cold weather. Cookies are a beloved treat of most families, and baking is a great way to spend more quality time with loved ones over the holidays. I absolutely love cooking and baking, I find it to be just as therapeutic and relaxing as knitting. Homemade gingersnap cookies were my inspiration for the Gingersnap Hats kit, knit using Deluxe Worsted Tweed.

Techniques you’ll explore in the Gingersnap Hats patterns are

Knitting in the round
Stranded Colorwork
Slipped stitches
Mosaic Knitting
Cables
Making pom poms

The Gingersnap Hats kit comes with the yarn you need and three hat patterns rolled into one (like a cookie!). One kit will make all three hats- meaning you can keep all three for yourself, or gift a couple to loved ones! Each hat is very different, so you’ll get to explore a wide variety of fun techniques in the whole pattern. I chose colors that felt warm, spicy, and worked well together. I love how the different shades don’t compete with one another in these hats, and each one shows off the tweedy nubs in Deluxe Worsted Tweed so well. This superwash wool based yarn is wonderful to work with and easy to care for.

The Two-Color Plaid Hat features a broken rib hem in the color 920 Camel. I love ribbing stitches, and enjoyed playing with some different rib stitches for this hat trio. You’ll then work a buffalo style plaid colorwork pattern all over the body of the hat. It easily works into the crown shaping, creating a seamless look. Since this colorwork only uses 2 colors, it has a very bold, graphic look that makes a statement.

For the next part of the Gingersnap Hats, I designed the Two-Color Cable Hat. This hat features some knitting techniques that are really fun when worked together. First, you’ll work a folded brim using the color 913 Smoke, in a classic K1, P1 rib stitch. Then, you’ll immediately begin working the mosaic two-color cable texture. This type of knitting uses slipped stitches in one color and knit stitches in another to achieve the final texture. You’ll also work cables into the mosaic pattern. Although this may sound intimidating, you’ll only be using one color per row, making it easy to tackle! Mosaic knitting has a unique process and end-result appearance that you’ll love once you get the hang of it.

The final hat in the trio is the Three-Color Hat. First, you’ll work a twisted rib hem (my favorite), then, you’ll use all three colors for a slipped stitch tweed-like pattern. From there, you’ll transition into the stranded colorwork section of the hat. This hat uses all three colors, so be extra mindful of your float tension here, and change needle sizes as indicated in the pattern. For the crown shaping, we return to the rhythmic tweed texture. Each of these hats is adorned with a pom pom that matches the color of the ribbing. So cute!

For today’s post, I wanted to share a delicious recipe for homemade ginger cookies, which inspired the Gingersnap Hats. These cookies are soft, chewy, full of spice, and drizzled with white chocolate. If you need encouragement for baking, the office staff ate all of these cookies in about 10 minutes after I finished taking these photos!

For the cookies you will need:

1 cup of sugar
3/4 cup of shortening or butter (your preference)
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 cups of all purpose baking flour
2 teaspoons of baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
brown sugar, cinnamon, and white sugar blend for rolling cookies before baking
white chocolate for drizzling (I like the Ghirardelli melting wafers)

How to make cookies

Combine the sugar, molasses, shortening or butter, and egg in a large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium until mixture becomes light and fluffy.
Add in your dry ingredients, and use a large mixing spoon or spatula and stir to combine well.
Once well combined, cover with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge. Minimum: 1 hour
While dough is chilling, preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Pour cinnamon, brown, and white sugar mix onto a plate.
Using a cookie scoop or spoon, scoop out and roll dough into 1″ balls. Roll the dough in the sugar mixture to give a light all-over coating.
Place approx 12 cookies per sheet, leaving space between each cookie. (Recipe makes 24-28 cookies depending on size)
Bake the cookies for 10 minutes, or until they rise and fall in the oven (to retain chewy soft texture).
Remove from oven and place sheet of parchment paper with cookies on counter to cool completely. If you have wire cooling racks, you may also use these. I like leaving the parchment paper underneath for easy cleanup after drizzling chocolate!
Once the cookies are completely cool, heat your white chocolate per the package instructions.
Using a small sandwich bag, spoon the liquid white chocolate into the bag, and ziplock closed. Cut a very small hole in one corner of the bag.
Use a zig-zag motion to drizzle the white chocolate over the cookies. Make a second pass in the opposite direction.
Allow to cool completely, until the chocolate becomes hard. enjoy!!!

Free Pattern Friday – Embers Hat

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Embers Hat in Be Wool and Be Wool Multi (pattern link here).

So how about it? Done with all your gift knitting this year? I’m not – I still have a single requested Towanda Sock to go. But there’s still time to squeeze in some quick handmade projects, when you choose those projects carefully!

Fun pom pom. I’m a sucker for a pom pom!

Thick yarn? Check! Solid Be Wool and its color-flecked sibling Be Wool Multis are a perfect matching pair. Each is a thick, soft wool/acrylic blend that works up lightning-fast.

You’ll cast on with US Size 15 (10 mm) 16″ circular for the 2×2 ribbed brim, then move to US Size 17 (12 mm) needles for the body of the hat.

The Fair Isle diamonds pattern is simple enough. The use of multi-colored yarn creates a more syncopated rhythm to the color than straight solid-on-solid, although you could certainly use a coordinating Be Wool color in place of the Multis. I’m wondering how 109 Tango, a rich red, would look!

Pom pom? Check! And I do love how Be Wool Multis creates a variegated topper without any extra work on the crafter’s part. It’s literally the crowning touch!

Day 2 of Winter – Series 5 Edition

This is part 2 in a 12 part series highlighting designs from our 12 Days of Winter, series 5 Edition.

Have you ever been on a classic sleigh ride on a cold winter night? Maybe you’ve gone on a lovely horse-drawn carriage ride on a chilly day. If not, perhaps it’s on your wintertime bucket list? Whether you have or haven’t, one thing you surely need while gliding gently through the snowy woods is a set of woolly accessories to keep you cozy and warm, and the Sleigh Ride Set is a perfect choice!

The Sleigh Ride Set is knit using my favorite stash staple, Deluxe Worsted, which is a 100% non-superwash wool yarn. I choose colors 12282 Hunter Green and 40002 Millet for the design – the green provides excellent, earthy contrast, and the lightness of the undyed yarn is the perfect choice for showing off plump cables. In this set, you’ll get to explore the following techniques:

Knitting Small Circumferences in the Round
Cable Knitting
Ribbing
Making a Pom Pom

It’s no secret that I love the outdoors, so it always serves as great inspiration. My entire life, my favorite trees have been evergreen trees. I love that they provide a bit of color during the leafless time of year, are visually stunning with their variety of needle lengths (I mean, they have needles – and I’m a knitter, what’s not to love?), feature everything from adorable and small to impressively large pine cones, provide tasty pine nuts (yum!), and…my favorite thing about them…the amazing fragrance! So I can’t help myself – I look to them often for design inspiration and the ideas keep coming. In this case, they are the inspiration for the cable motif that decorates the hat and mitts. Ribbing that features a rope of cables serves as the trunk in the contrast color ribbing and cuffs, then the boughs begin during the main portion of both accessories.

Each mitt in the set mirrors the other one.

Doesn’t this set make you immediately cross your fingers for snow (especially if you live in a place that lacks snow, like me!)? I know snow is unlikely, but the mornings here have still been chilly. And now that it’s December, I’m finally in the mood for some holiday tunes and I’d love to share my favorites with you! Now I’m daydreaming about that sleigh ride – but with the extra magic of festive tunes in the background, all while wearing my delightful knit set!

My first pick is just plain fun. It reminds me of my childhood because it’s my mom’s favorite holiday song: Winter Wonderland by Bing Crosby. It’s also the perfect song for this accessory duo, after all, it starts:

“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight
We’re happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland”.

I can’t help but smile when I hear this song. It literally makes me warm with joy and instantly in the mood for all things holiday – from decorating to gift-giving, to frolicking in the woods with my two pups, it truly captures the joy of the season.

Next up, another traditional choice for the season! I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of lyrical holiday music, with a few exceptions like the one listed above. Most of the time I prefer instrumental music to spark those festive feelings. And what better instrumental, classical music than the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky? I was never a ballerina, but I’ve always enjoyed ballet, and seeing The Nutcracker brings me much joy. I may not need to wear a hat and mitts during the event, but they’ll surely be a benefit while walking to the theater on a chilly night!

Looking for music to soothe your ears while knitting this gorgeous kit? My last recommendation is a go-to for me, but it’s definitely not quite traditional. Whether I am at work, relaxing at home, or even doing my everyday chores, I really enjoy listening to lo-fi music. The beats are so calming and help me focus. Lucky for us, there are some great options available on YouTube, like the perfect Lofi Christmas Radio by Lofi Geek. This is hands-down what I’ll most likely be listening to while I work on my gift-knitting this year. And, tying this all back to the Sleigh Ride Set – this would truly be a fabulous gift, as a kit or as the actual hand-knit items!

Free Pattern Friday – Autumn Oak

It’s September, which means the official end of summer is mere weeks away and the season of all things woolly is upon us. For me, that means hats, hats, and more hats! I’m sure I’ve said this before, but hats are one of my favorite things to design and knit. I love everything about the process – they’re an excellent playground for a variety of techniques, quick to work up, and make wonderful gifts. That’s why I’m thrilled to share my latest design with you: the Autumn Oak Hat (pattern link).

Autumn Oak is knit using plush and cozy Posh Alpaca, a blend of wool, superfine alpaca, and acrylic. This single-ply yarn is a super bulky weight but feels surprisingly light and springy. The palette is full of gorgeous neutrals and autumnal hues, and the colorway that simply sings to my heart is #112 Carotene, used in the Autumn Oak Hat. Orange, especially burnt orange, is perhaps my most favorite color, so I knew I needed to design something with it. This autumnal orange immediately conjured images of brilliant fall foliage, especially that of oak trees.

The Autumn Oak hat features a singular, large leaf motif that simply pops off the background of reverse stockinette stitch. It is complemented by twiggy lace motifs around the rest of the hat. These elements make this an engaging pattern that offers a bit of a challenge in a small package – again, hats are a perfect playground for learning new skills!

The lace motifs flow elegantly into the crown shaping, making this piece look great at every angle. It’s topped with a fluffy pom pom, and let me tell you, Posh Alpaca makes a really plush and fluffy pom pom!

Even though Posh Alpaca only contains 98 yards, it goes a long way. This hat is just a one-ball project, even with the pom pom. It works up fast, so you can knit one for yourself and for your friends and family in no time! It would look gorgeous knit up in any of the other colors, but I’d love to see versions of it using the colors inspired by trees: #101 Birch, #102, Oak, and #111 Hemlock. Whatever color you choose, you simply can’t go wrong!
