Holiday Helper – December is here!

How’s the holiday knitting going? I’m doing better than expected – I found this glittering little gem on our shelves here yesterday and am happily knitting a quick one-ball scarf. The yarn is Classic Shades Metallic (175yds/100g) and the color is 607 Zenith. When I saw the red and green accented by silver, I knew it would make the perfect holiday project. This scarf couldn’t be any more Christmasy unless Santa Claus himself knitted it using two candy canes.

The pattern is a scaled-down version of this free three-ball Classic Shades Shawl pattern by Olga Tonjes. She also provides instructions for working just one section (as I’m doing in the picture above), making this a great project to adapt if you’re really backed up on your holiday knitting.

Classic Shades Metallic is interchangeable with customer favorite Classic Shades, but with an extra strand of glitter running through it, making it perfect for gifts that you really want to stand out.

I’ve got another couple of balls of Classic Shades Metallic sitting beside me right now – this scarf is going quickly, and I’ll definitely have time to knock out another gift. This time, I think I’ll work up the Longways Linen Scarf. On size 9 needles with a basic two row pattern repeat, it ought to go quickly. I’ll make it through the holidays yet!

Throwback Thursday – Jolly St. Nick

It’s Throwback Thursday!

I’m home celebrating Thanksgiving with my family, but couldn’t resist sharing this little guy – especially after we promised the crocheters last week!

Jolly St. Nick is a crochet version of Santa from Michele Wilcox, the Queen of Cute. He stands 18″ high including hat – if you’ve seen an American Girl-style doll, that’s about the same height. Just as with last week’s knit Santa, we’re recommending Uptown Worsted. The 100% anti-pilling acrylic stands up to a lot of beard-pulling and snuggles.

Start at the top of his head and work down, then go back and add all the details that make him so adorable. Any pattern that instructs you to embroider a smile is a keeper.

We hope you’re having a wonderful Thanksgiving. This year, as every year, I am grateful for the ability to create, and in so doing to bring joy to myself and others. And always, always, there is gratitude for the community of fellow crafters who enrich our lives. What are you thankful for this year?

Throwback Thursday – Hearty Holiday Santa

It’s Throwback Thursday!

This week, we asked our Facebook friends whether they’d rather see a knit or a crochet pattern today. The knits won – but don’t worry, crocheters, we’ll have something for you next week!

Michele Wilcox’s Hearty Holiday Santa is mittens-down the most adorable Santa I’ve seen. You just know that when he laughs, his belly shakes like a bowl full of jelly.

Santa was originally made in now-discontinued Classic Worsted Holiday. We’re updating the selection to Uptown Worsted. The 100% anti-pilling acrylic will stand up to quite a few hugs.

Make the legs, then the body and head, then add on details like ears, belt, and hat. You can’t quite see it in the picture, but Santa has an adorable smile behind his beard. We hope this project will make you smile too.

Throwback Thursday – Crochet Candy Stripes Stocking

It’s Throwback Thursday!

Can’t you hear those sleigh bells jingling? We had a Facebook message asking for this pattern, so we just had to set it free for the holidays.

The Crochet Candy Stripes Stocking is another great pattern from Michele Wilcox. This was formerly part of a kit using Classic Worsted Holiday. We’re recommending Uptown Worsted. It’s soft, machine washable, anti-pilling, and able to last through the years.

I will freely admit that my crochet skills are not as strong as my knit skills (yet!) but this is a project I could tackle with no problem. And I love the button panel. It’s a great detail that makes the project. I’m already thinking about who deserves a lovely stocking to hang by the chimney with care.

Holiday Helper – Quick Cowls

Breathe in… breathe out… knit one… purl two…

Everybody calm? Good. Let’s stay relaxed, because there’s still plenty of time to knit some lovely gifts for the holidays. This week, let’s focus on quick and chunky knits. Fortunately, we have an entire free e-book devoted to exactly this kind of pattern.

Quick Cowls collects five patterns in bulky weight yarns that look good and work up quickly.

The Get To the Point Cowl in Classic Shades Frenzy is always popular when we send it out for trunk shows. In fact, it’s on the road again this month for a showing at Bourgee Boutique in Claremont, CA. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and see it. Variegated Classic Shades Frenzy does the heavy lifting in making a striking design. Just one ball on US Size 11 (8mm) needles does the trick.

The Ethereal Lace Cowl is a lovely soft lace pattern that gets you a lot of bang for your buck. One ball of Mohair Mountain (660yds per ball) will make five cowls on US Size 11 (8mm) needles. That’s a lot of gifts from just one ball. The pattern is both written and charted, so pick whatever you’re comfortable with.

The Everyone Likes Stripes cowl is another that knits up quickly on size 11 (8mm) needles. With more than 120 colors of the called-for Deluxe Chunky 100% wool, this is a very easy piece to customize for your giftee. This is also one that I would have to put away after knitting because otherwise I’d keep it for myself.

Hairpin! This technique isn’t used as often as it should be! The Hairpin Lace Cowl uses one skein of Bamboo Bloom Handpaints for the vibrant variegated stripes and one skein of Deluxe Chunky for the solid center and edge. Unusual and beautiful.

Finally, the Lava Flow Cowl uses just one skein of Superwool on size 17 needles. We call it Superwool because it’s super stretchy. This is a warm and soft cowl with a lot of “sproing” to it. I’ve made this one myself – it’s a very fast and satisfying knit.

Breathe in… breathe out… we’re calm, right? Let’s all keep knitting and we’ll all get to the holidays together in great shape.

Free Pattern Friday – Crinkle Cowl

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, the Crinkle Cowl in Whisper Lace and Cotton Gold.

This is a great example of how bringing two different things together can result in something spectacular. Light and airy Whisper Lace is a laceweight wool/silk blend from our Fibra Natura line of natural luxury fibers. It’s a great choice for delicate, light projects.

Pair that with sequined Cotton Gold from our Rozetti line and you’ve got the perfect amount of bling to turn a light confection into a glamorous accessory perfect for party season.

Knit it flat on size 5 needles, work the light shaping to help it sit gracefully on your shoulders, then seam it up. Next step: be prepared to answer the sea of “where did you get that?” admiration with “What, this? I made it myself.”

As much as I love this in black, I’m wondering how it would look in Whisper Lace 113 Tango and Cotton Gold 1092. More to the point, I’m wondering how I would look rolling up to the office holiday party in a black jacket with this draped artfully around my neck.

Black’s a classic, but don’t limit yourself. You do you!

Holiday Helper – Light and Breezy

Halloween’s behind us, which means it’s time to kick our holiday knitting into high gear. Or, if you’re me, it’s time to actually *start* your holiday knitting. I’m sure all of you are busy weaving in ends on that heirloom blanket that you started back in January, but maybe – just maybe – you are in the same boat as I am and are suddenly remembering that one person you wanted to make something special for who slipped your mind.

Worry no more! From now through the end of the year we’ll be highlighting some relatively quick designs that will still satisfy your recipient without driving you crazy. This week, let’s look at a couple of light and easy projects in warm-weather yarns.

The free High Tide Shawlette is made in Cotton Supreme DK Seaspray. This took just one hank, albeit with only a few yards left over. There’s still enough time to make this lovely triangular shawl on US Size 8 (5mm) needles before the holidays roll around. Denim print is going to be big next season, so it’ll be very on trend for your giftee.

The free Botanical Scarf takes just one skein of Good Earth Adorn cotton/linen blend. This is a luxury yarn that feels great but won’t break the bank. This is another one on US Size 8 (5mm) needles. With an easy-to-memorize pattern, this would be great to take along in the plane or car home for the holidays. And again, Good Earth Adorn has that subtle earthy look that’s going to stay in fashion for a long time to come.

My main problem with starting holiday gifts early is that they stay around my house and I think, “You know, this would look great on me.” And then I wind up having to knit another gift.

Throwback Thursday – Sparkling Snowman

It’s Throwback Thursday!

Last week’s Happy Little Elf proved so popular that we thought we’d keep the (snow)ball rolling. Here’s the Sparkling Snowman!

Another absolutely adorable design by Michele Wilcox, we’re again recommending Uptown Worsted 100% anti-pilling acrylic. It’s soft, long-lasting, and machine washable.

I’ve got this little guy beside me right now. For those wondering, the mittens are part of the arms, but the sweater and hat can be removed. The original snowman’s hat is lightly sewn down to keep it on for photography and trunk show visits, but that’s not mandatory. If he gets too warm, we can take it off.

The little broom is optional, but should be easy to find in a craft store. The more I look at this little fella, the more I think maybe he needs a candy cane. Or how about a tiny hockey stick, and embroider your favorite player’s number on the sweater? He’s got kind of a Wayne Gretzky nose going on.

However you dress your snowman up or down, we wish you happy knitting!

Throwback Thursday – Happy Little Elf

It’s Throwback Thursday!We had someone on Facebook ask about this pattern a couple of days ago, and it reminded us of how close the holidays are. So today, we offer this formerly paid pattern, now set free!

The Happy Little Elf is an adorable Michele Wilcox design (we love Michele!) that was originally only available as part of a kit featuring Classic Worsted Holiday. We’re recommending Uptown Worsted as a substitute.

Uptown Worsted is 100% anti-pilling acrylic. As a former yarn snob, I was skeptical of acrylics until I squeezed my first skein of Uptown. This would definitely be soft enough for a beloved little friend who is also machine washable.

What I like about Uptown for this pattern is that it has a broad color palette. Our recommendations to match the original Happy Little Elf are pictured here, but there are a good variety of skin tones and jacket and shoe options if you want to personalize your elf.

Looking at elf pictures online (I love my job) made me realize just how standard this elf costume is in popular culture, and how versatile this little elf could be. You could make a little buddy, so to speak…

…or you could make your own little offbeat elf to take on adventures.

We just got that 356 Bright Blue in stock. It’s like it was meant to be.

Free Pattern – Wee Pumpkins

Okay, it’s not Free Pattern Friday yet, but we just couldn’t resist sharing this free pattern.

These are the Wee Pumpkins. We’re sharing them now so you have plenty of time to work one up by Halloween! Or what about Thanksgiving ? Wouldn’t these look great on a dining room table?

They’re made in self-shading Poems 100% wool, which has some great fall colors. The purple/green one on the left is 577 Bramble and the orange-toned one is 585 Autumn.

The pumpkins are knit sideways, with short rows making up the wedge sections. Take a look at the bottom and you can see how it all comes together.

Never done short rows before? This is a great project to get your feet wet. Amy Gunderson shares a video in how to do the wrap and turn.

Also of interest in there is the SSP (slip, slip, purl). I’ve made things with short rows before, and inevitably had one side look seamless and one side marred with a big bump. I’m delighted to learn a technique to make both ends of my short row look smooth.

Often, we’ll loan our knits to local yarn stores for them to share in trunk shows, but it’s going to be hard to part with these. They’re just so pretty!
