Collection Spotlight: Fall Florals

Autumn is knocking at the door, and today, we’re letting it in! Our Fall Florals collection is here! With six patterns that capture the essence of nature’s blooming wonders, we know you’ll fall in love. So what are we waiting for? Let our journey begin as we discover each of these stunning creations!

Cardigans are often associated with autumn, so you know we had to include one in this collection! Celosia, designed by Rachel Brockman, is full of vibrant fall colors using our Deluxe DK Superwash yarn. The beautiful Daises pattern adds texture to this piece as you change between three alternating colors. This cardigan has retro features, like the polo collar and bell-shaped sleeves. A touch of crochet finishes off the edges along the hem and sleeve cuffs, giving you a staple top for the crisp fall air! This cardigan uses colors 807 Ginseng as the main color (50% off color – available in bag quantities), 851 Rhapsody, and 803 Terra Cotta. Celosia includes sizes XS through 5X, as do all the garments featured in this collection.

While Cirsium is a prickly plant in nature, in the form of a knitted accessory, it’s as soft as can be! Let the soothing stockinette stitch take you on an exciting adventure as you knit this tubular cowl. This cowl is worked in the round, using a stranded color motif, which brings to life the flowers seen throughout. Cirsium uses three heathered shades of Deluxe DK Superwash, adding even more beauty to this accessory. With the soft and plush texture of the wool fibers featured in this cowl, you’ll stay cozy all autumn! Cirsium includes a small and large size, with the sample pictured above shown in large. The colors used for this cowl are 842 Oatmeal Heather and 845 Shamrock Heather. Color 848 Coral Heather is also used, however, since this color is sold out, we suggest using 841 Pomegranate Heather.

Grow your knitting skills with the stranded colorwork of Festoon, designed by Aubrey Busek. This marvelous shawl features botanical silhouettes that adorn the entirety of this piece. The Intarsia method is used along the border, beginning, and end of the motifs within the charts, providing gorgeous color changes throughout. More stranded colorwork will be used for the motifs, but don’t fret; this is an excellent opportunity to grow your skills! Grab two of your favorite hues of Deluxe DK Superwash and get going on this shawl! The colors used in the sample above are 815 Teal Viper and 852 Bashful.

Sweater weather is almost here! That means it’s the perfect time to get started on projects likeĀ Picotee, designed by Rachel Brockman. Using Intarsia, a beautiful flower is incorporated to be the centerpiece of this garment. However, there’s so much more to love about this sweater! The set-in sleeves, A-line waistband, and folded neckband will keep you bundled up for the coldest fall mornings! Picotee is knit flat, then seamed, and it features stockinette stitch throughout. This pullover uses colors 846 Mulberry Heather, 801 Rosy Mauve (50% off and available in bag quantities), 824 Starfish, and 810 Greenery (50% off and available in bag quantities). Color 811 Jadestone is also used, but since this color is sold out, we suggest 836 Christmas Green.

Don’t think we forgot about our crochet friends! Superbloom, designed by Ashley Jane McIntyre, uses five colors of Deluxe DK Superwash to create a stole dressed with beautiful flowers. With exhilarating features like Granny Squares, a Tulip Motif, Flowers, and Leaves, this accessory will inspire you to travel to your favorite park. Superbloom shows off solid and heathered shades of Deluxe DK Superwash, but the freedom is all yours! Grab this pattern and get stitching today! This stole uses colors 841 Pomegranate Heather, 846 Mulberry Heather, 850 Heather (50% off and available in bag quantities), and 845 Shamrock Heather. Color 848 Coral Heather is also used, but since this color is sold out, we suggest using 824 Starfish.

Last but not least, we have Verbena, designed by Aubrey Busek. This stunning pullover features cables down the middle on the front and back. However, your eyes may take you to the flowers embroidered on the front and sleeves. With show-stopping qualities throughout, this garment will be a wardrobe staple! Verbena is knit flat in pieces and seamed; instructions for the embroidery sections are in the pattern notes as an illustrative schematic and stitch guide. Wear Verbena to your next dinner party and watch the compliments roll in! This pullover uses colors 834 Cream, 815 Teal Viper, and 852 Bashful.

Photo of the Seedling Washcloths in Cotton Supreme and Cotton Supreme Speckles with the text "Free Pattern Friday - Seedling Washcloths" to the right of the washcloths.

Picking the perfect home accessory for spring is not an easy decisionā€¦ until today! This week for Free Pattern Friday, we are happy to introduce the Seedling Washcloths in Cotton Supreme and Cotton Supreme Speckles. The smooth cotton fibers of these yarns make for satisfying homewares, so let’s learn more about this unique project!

Spring brings new life, much like knitting can bring a project to life at your fingertips. The Seedling Washcloths are inspired by nature blooming all around us. You will use increases and decreases to form the beautiful leaf shape seen in the samples above. Plus, you will get to try a variety of engaging stitches to create the lace definition that brings an added element of excitement to this project. Let’s look at some color options so you can get started on this beautiful pair of washcloths!

The pattern calls for one skein of each of these yarns to create complimentary pieces for your home. These 100% cotton yarns are soft, durable, and machine washable and offer an expansive solid and multi-colored palette to work with. While leaves are often green in nature, there’s no reason you can’t bring your personality into this project. One color combination to try is Cotton Supreme color 515 Blue matched with Cotton Supreme Speckles color 1004 Pastel Pop (photographed above). The blue in this shade of Speckles is a very close match to the solid color of Cotton Supreme, too!

Cotton Supreme and Cotton Supreme Speckles are 20% off this weekend (4/21 – 4/23)

Flash Pattern Friday – Chiaroscuro

There’s nothing quite like Friday, and for this week’s Flash Pattern Friday, we have a fun surprise. Wool combined with classic tweedy nubs makes for the most exciting sweater projects, and today through Sunday, you can download the Chiaroscuro sweater for free on Ravelry!

The Chiaroscuro sweater features beautiful colorwork throughout the yoke.

Designed by Amy Gunderson, Chiaroscuro offers so much to love, but what stands out the most is the colorwork patterns on the yoke of this sweater. Three colors combine, using rhythmic slip stitches to create a design of crosses and left and right slants. Add in a funnel neck design and a bit of added length, and you’ve got a cozy and comfortable sweater you’ll reach for time and time again. This pattern might sound intimidating but don’t worry – it’s perfect for those looking to grow their knitting skills!

The oversized design of this sweater makes it nice and cozy.

The rolled and contrasting color hem, neckline, and sleeve cuffs add another element of excitement to the construction of this garment. Worked in a contrasting color, this added detail is not overbearing, but we know it will make others take notice. This sweater is found in the Still Life pattern collection, which features six garments and accessories in Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash and Deluxe Worsted Superwash. Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash has 24 different color options, so you can make a sweater that uses your favorite colors. The Chiaroscuro is sized from Small through 5X and is free to download on Ravelry through Sunday!

We are now offering three beautiful yarns from Yarn Vibes, and I can’t wait to tell you more about these exciting yarns!

Before I begin talking about the yarns, let’s take a closer look at the Yarn Vibes brand. Each hank of yarn starts in Kildare with ninth-generation farmers; after the shearing, the fleece begins processing at Donegal Yarn in Ireland. Donegal Yarn is an authentic mill that produces beautiful Tweed and Irish yarns, including Yarn Vibes’ 100% Irish yarns. All of their yarns feature a variety of dyed and un-dyed options.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the yarn from Yarn Vibes, starting with Cliffs of Moher. Tradition and the roots of Ireland can be seen in this beautiful, nature-inspired yarn, named after the iconic cliffs of western Ireland. This worsted weight yarn is a blend of 60% Irish wool and 40% virgin wool. Cliffs of Moher is soft to the touch, with stitch definition that makes it perfect for any knitting or crochet project, from garments to accessories. With 16 color options, you can add a touch of your personality to your next project!

Organic Worsted yarn from Yarn Vibes
Organic – Worsted from Yarn Vibes

Next up is the Organic Yarn from Yarn Vibes. As we know, wool is lovable for so many reasons: insulating fibers, natural water resistance, breathability. With Yarn Vibes 100% Irish organic wool yarns, it is now environmentally conscious as well! Just another reason to fall in love with wool. These fibers have been thoughtfully handled to ensure you have the best knitting experience possible. Make a sweater for a loved one with peace of mind knowing you and your family will be safe from any harmful chemicals since their yarn uses GOTS-certified dyes (Global Organic Textile Standard). This organic yarn is found in both worsted and sport weight and features 19 different color options, including four undyed choices.

Pattern inspiration is something we all need, and Yarn Vibes has more than enough to spare. Let’s take a look at some projects you can start with!

If you are more interested in knitting a garment, you might want to start with the Fia Cabled Cardigan (bottom left). Buttons and cables give this cardigan a classic look, and the 100% Irish organic wool will keep you warm on the coldest days of winter and spring. This project uses the Organic Worsted and allows you room to pick the color you prefer.

Our in-house design team was also inspired to create a pattern for Yarn Vibes! The Freya Scarf (bottom right) combines two different colors of Cliffs of Moher to create a classic Irish look with a soft and woolly texture. You can download it for free today!

Flash Pattern Friday – Middlefield

Our first Flash Pattern Friday of 2023 is finally here! This weekend only, grab a free copy of this gorgeous knitting pattern!

Middlefield is the perfect layering piece for the coldest days of winter

On the last Friday of every month, we take a beautiful paid pattern and make it free for the weekend! Today, we’re making the Middlefield (Ravelry link) free to you, a timeless cabled design in our Deluxe Bulky Superwash yarn.

This piece can be worn with the cabel panels horizontal or vertical, whichever you prefer!

Middlefield was first published in 2017 as part of the Ethereal Knits ebook. This collection features seven garments and accessories that are perfect multi-season options for your wardrobe. However, Middlefield is a great challenge for those looking to grow their knitting skillset. This knitted poncho has cabled panels that can be worn horizontally or vertically, depending on your preference. The two sides are identical rectangles, knit sideways and then seamed together to complete this garment. While this outwear piece uses the color 930 Steel Cut Oats, there are plenty of options for those looking to go a different direction.

Here are some alternative color options that I would like to suggest. Jadestone brings a beautiful earthy tone that would be perfect for springtime (warm weather, we miss you). Pantone just released their 2023 Color Of The Year, Viva Magenta, and Rosy Mauve would make a great choice if you want to go that route. While winter is still here, Ice Rustic and Summer Sky present two frosty colors that would match the season perfectly. No matter what shade sparks your creativity, I know you will find inspiration from our 50+ color options in Deluxe Bulky Superwash.

This poncho will keep you warm year-round thanks to the 100% superwash wool and bulky yarn weight of Deluxe Bulky Superwash!

To get Middlefield for free, head to Ravelry and click “buy it now” or “add to cart” after searching for this pattern. When you reach the checkout, enter the code “FLASH” to get this pattern for free. Not a Ravelry user? Email us at pattern@universalyarn.com by Sunday, January 29th, and we will take care of you when we return to the office next week.

This graphic will help guide you through the checkout process to get Middlefield for free

We hope that you enjoy this limited-time free pattern, and make sure to shop Deluxe Bulky Superwash this weekend to save 20% off, no code necessary (1/27 – 1/29).

Yarn Spotlight: Cobblestone

Hello to our fellow yarn lovers! It feels like summer has flown by, and now autumn is on the way. None of us are complaining about cooler weather, though. There is something about the crisp fall air that brings a sense of relaxation. Whether you are sitting by the fireplace knitting to your favorite tv show, or out and about, this is the perfect time for fall projects.

Today we’re spotlighting a yarn that has been popular since its release last fall: Cobblestone. The name itself paints a picture of the fall season, and the yarn certainly passes the test. There are so many great free patterns and some new colors, so why don’t we go ahead and jump in?

Clockwise (left to right) – Cobblestone is 108 Tuxedo, 105 Mallard, 102 Precious Jewels, and 106 Meadow

When it comes to sophisticated yarns, Cobblestone is right up there with the rest. This yarn is perfect for classic garments and accessories, some of which will be highlighted here in this blog. This two-ply yarn has one variegated ply and one solid ply giving Cobblestone a beautiful handspun appearance. It is a great idea to stick with simpler stitch motifs because cables and lace could get lost, but that doesn’t stop Cobblestone from bringing a creative touch to sweaters, scarves, socks, and the list could go on and on.

Cobblestone is a fine, sport-weight yarn made from 100% superwash merino wool, giving it a light feel and making it perfect for early fall. Each ball boasts 200 g / 612 yards, making it an excellent option for bigger projects or several small projects. The wool fibers still do their job of keeping you nice and cozy, while not being winter-weather warm. Whether you knit or crochet, this yarn is soft to the touch and easy to work with. Now, let’s learn about color options.

Cobblestone in 107 Cotton Candy with a crochet hook

There are 16 beautiful, unique colorways in Cobblestone – eight of which are brand new for this season (pictured below). Antarctica (#114) reminds me of a snowy night by the fire pit, roasting s’mores with friends. While Parakeet (#110) looks like a fun day surfing at the beach. There’s a perfect color scheme for everyone with Cobblestone, the question now is, what should you make? Well, we are glad you asked. Cobblestone is featured in plenty of free patterns, so let’s highlight a few.

The eight new colors of Cobblestone released for Fall 2022

The Cotton Candy Swirl… Doesn’t that just sound so yummy? The aptly-named Cotton Candy (#107) colorway just reminds me of a ballpark cotton candy treat. This shawl is sure to get you compliments every time you wear it, and will keep you cozy when the weather gets chilly. This is the perfect free pattern option to start your fall crochet projects. The stitch definition is clear to see in this accessory, and the yarn adds unique characteristics to the finished shawl. The fun color shifts in Cobblestone work with the treble crochet pattern to create a bright and happy project. This pattern is a great choice for all skill levels and only requires one skein of Cobblestone. If you’re not a huge fan of pastels, any color will look amazing in the Cotton Candy Swirl.

The Cotton Candy Swirl with 107 Cotton Candy

How about a pair of socks? Cobblestone is an insulating, lightweight, and springy yarn – all great attributes for creating a cozy pair. Not only that, but with the amount of yardage in each skein, you’ll have enough to make some for yourself and friends and family. The free Cobblesocks, designed by Heather Hill, are knit in the round from toe-up. This knitting pattern is a lovely way to start the autumn season. I think Tuxedo (#108) would make a great pair of socks that are easy to match and comfortable to wear.

Cobblesocks with 105 Mallard

The last pattern we will mention is the Gravel Sweater, designed by Rachel Brockman. This sweater uses both Cobblestone and Donnina. The sleeve cuffs, hems, and neckline all use Donnina, and that leaves a canvas for Cobblestone to complete the main body of the sweater. The timeless color choices of Cobblestone make this sweater really stand out, just make sure to match it with a coordinating color of Donnina if you choose to stray away from Tuxedo (#108) in Cobblestone. While this sweater is sized for women, it could easily be adapted for men, too.

Gravel Sweater with 108 Tuxedo and 230 Onyx in Donnina

There are a few more patterns that use our Cobblestone yarn, including wraps, sweaters, hats, and more. You can find them all on our website by searching “Cobblestone patterns.” If you are more of a kinesthetic learner, then take a look at a local yarn store near you, so you can go in and get a feel for Cobblestone. We hope you have enjoyed hearing more about this yarn and we can’t wait to see what you will make with it!

P.S – Stay tuned for more great things in Cobblestone to come this fall!

Keep on crafting! -Robert

A Crocheter’s take on Elevated Essentials

Hello There!

This week I’m taking a look at our fabulous Elevated Essentials collection. From the moment I saw the photos I instantly fell head-over-heels in love. In a word, the overall style is Luxe. With chic neutral tones and texture-rich detailing in each of the finished pieces, it’s easy to see why the descriptor used in the collection name was “Elevated.”

Carillon in Deluxe Worsted Color 40002 Millet

The yarn used for each of these looks is our Deluxe Worsted and Deluxe Worsted Naturals, which are 100% Wool and come at the affordable price point of $8.25 per skein. Based on the natural composition and budget-friendly qualities, this yarn is deemed the essential yarn to have in your stash.

Deluxe Worsted in 12501 Oatmeal Heather

My favorite sweater is the Eilhart pullover, which gives me some serious craft envy when I see all of the gorgeous cables. Crochet has some ways to mimic this iconic look but when I consider this particular pattern I just don’t think it would compare.

Eilhart in Deluxe Worsted colors 40001 cream, 40003 Musket and 12180 Eggplant

The pattern has a hypnotic flow to it, creating a sleek silhouette drawing the eye down, while intertwining in the center and sides perfectly. The other design element that I love is the deep contrast in color for the sleeves and neck. I would normally think of this style as playful like a baseball tee, but instead it stripped away notions of playtime and had me ready to grab some needles and get to work. The ribbing is enough to be interesting but doesn’t compete with the stunning bodywork. In fact, I feel it further frames the intense center detailing with the drastic color change and subtle texture.

Compare the cables seen above with the crochet ones below. It just wouldn’t quite do the trick.

Image: Blog Post “How to Crochet Cables + Good Beginner Crochet Patterns”by Heather Mann on We Crochet

Let’s not get too caught up in the could you/couldn’t you debate though, and instead continue on to appreciate another marvelous piece.

Moria in Deluxe Worsted 12502 Smoke Heather and 1900 Ebony

The Moria Cape – the name alone stirs up my nerd-brain into a fantastical frenzy, but the design is simply breathtaking. The play on color creates a unique optical illusion that feels as whimsical as its namesake, and don’t event get me started on the perpetual Cable-Envy that this collection offers.

Moria in Deluxe Worsted 12502 Smoke Heather and 1900 Ebony

Well that’s all for now. The next time I’m back it may very well be to announce that the Crochet Corner is being abandoned for a Novice Knit Nook!

Happy Stitching Y’all, Ashley Jane
