muud Spotlight: Bag Bottoms and Straps

If you’ve never heard of muud, let us be the first to inform you! Located in Denmark, muud sells premium leather accessories specifically designed for the crafting community. Their brand features an extensive selection of bags, cases, clutches, and more for your crafting supplies. Let’s look at two unique products they offer that will add a touch of luxury to your next project!

The Danish company recently released a selection of bag bottoms for crocheters, and we’re excited to share them with you! The Duff and Dee make it easy for any fiber artist to craft a bag without worrying about the wear and tear your fibers would face from years of holding your belongings. The sturdy leather means you will have a durable, long-lasting bag with a luxurious look and feel. Both of these bag bottoms come in a regular (Dee approx. 4″ x 11″ | Duff approx. 8″ diameter) and XL ( Dee XL approx. 5″ x 14″ | Duff XL approx. 12″ diameter) version, as well as color options for black and whiskey.

Whether you use the Duff or Dee bag bottoms or not, you can top your bag with the Hudson and Hudson XL strap for a complete and polished look. We used the Hudson strap in black as a finishing touch to the free Kite Handbag crochet pattern, pictured below!

The Hudson straps are an incredibly convenient option for any maker. This product will allow you to pay full attention to the body of the bag you plan to knit, crochet, or weave without having to worry about a strap. Not only does that save you time, but it would bring a stylish look to your finished accessory! The Hudson strap is approximately 19 inches long, while the Hudson XL is about 25 inches. Depending on the size of your bag, you can choose accordingly, and as a bonus, these handles are completely removable, so you won’t be stuck with either one if it doesn’t work out with your accessory!

The latest releases from Muud are some of your tried and true favorites – only better. The Denmark based company creates products with crafters in mind, blending functionality with beautiful designs. Traditionally all of their pieces come in classic black and whiskey colors with understated and practical hardware, but this release offers a chic makeover.

2022 Limited Edition Muud

One of the standout elements is the gold zipper and hardware, adding a luxe feel to the attention and detailing of each piece. Right away, these bags and accessories project “designer” vibes but don’t actually come at the cost. The largest price difference comes with the coveted Saturn XL, normally $165, you can snag (or should we say steal!) the limited release for just $30 more at $195. With all of the pieces barely bumping above the norm, we won’t be surprised to see the full collection shipping out!

Saturn XL Limited Edition

Another thoughtful touch is the addition of a printed liner sporting the brand name in an adorable blush pink. I’m so thrilled about this because it truly sets this limited collection apart from the standard Muud line. It’s one of those details that is eye-catching in a fun peekaboo way that will delight you every time you unzip your bag to reach for your project!

Free Pattern Friday – Kite Handbag

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Woman wearing cream-colored crochet handbag slung over shoulder.

Today, the Kite Handbag crocheted in Clean Cotton (pattern link here).

We’re so lucky to have another beautiful crochet design from Edie Eckman!

Image of cream-colored crocheted purse lying in grass,

For this simple, classic design, Edie used Clean Cotton, which is 85% recycled cotton and 15% recycled polyester. It’s Earth-friendly and beautiful!

As well as solids, Clean Cotton is available in multis, for a lovely speckled effect in your projects.

Step one will be to make three individual squares, working in the round from the center out. Then join them at the edges to create the bag’s shape.

After joining, you’ll add a simple edging to the top for stability and a finished look.

Finally, add a handle. For ease, we used a handmade leather strap from Danish company muud, maker of fine leather bags. Here, we used a muud Hudson at 50cm (19.7″) long Hudson strap. You could also use the 70cm (27.5″) Hudson XL for additional length. They’re both available in black and in whisky on our site or from your LYS.

We love these straps because the simple swivel clasps are effortless to add and remove from your bag for easy care. Unclip the strap and toss your bag into the washing machine!

We hope you enjoy this beautiful, timeless crochet project. Have a great weekend – and happy crafting!

Design Spotlight: Galentine

How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Some people aren’t a fan of those “Hallmark Holidays,” but personally, I enjoy them. It’s frivolous fun, whether you celebrate by yourself or with someone special. Love it or hate it, we’re pretty sure you’ll enjoy the surprise free pattern we’re sharing just in time for Valentine’s Day. Say hello to Galentine (pattern link)!

You can wear the sleeve with the cuffs folded up, or not. Whatever makes you happy!

So, why Galentine? Well, first, how could we not choose a Valentine-related name for such a happy pink sweater? But more importantly, this sweater was designed by our managing director, Yonca, for her daughter, Talya. Mother, daughter, sister, friend – who wouldn’t want to treat their favorite gal-pal to a hand-knit sweater? (Side note: this isn’t the first sweater Yonca has knit for Talya. You might recall the Flouncy Fringe Tank from last year, another cute design!)

We love a good funnel neck sweater.

Talya requested a cozy, oversized pullover with a funnel neck and roomy sleeves that she could scrunch up or fold at the cuffs. And, as you can see, Galentine is just that. We love the funnel neck featured in this design. It’s perfect for keeping you extra warm on these chilly February days.

Dona comes in a variety of beautiful colors, many of which are perfect for Valentine’s Day! Here, Aubrey is holding balls of Dona in colors #108 Red Delicious, #111 Sweet Pea, and #114 Camellia.

Galentine is knit using staff-favorite, Fibra Natura Dona. It’s a dk-weight, 100% extra fine superwash merino wool yarn that is a dream to knit (or crochet). Its plump, smooth, and round texture give it unbeatable stitch definition. Although this pattern is mostly stockinette, the ribbing pops in Dona. Yonca used color #114 Camellia for the design, but Dona boasts a palette of 38 colors so there is truly something for everyone. Personally, if I was opting for a pink version I’d go with #112 Smoky Peach…but my top choice would be #105 Gingerbread – a burnt orange hue I can never resist!

This sweater is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed. After assembling the body, the neckband stitches are picked up and knit in the round. This is an easy pattern and would make a great first sweater. It’s excellent for virtual knit nights when you might find yourself a little distracted while chatting away with your friends.

So you might be thinking, “there is no way I can knit this before Valentine’s Day”. Of course not, but if you did we’d be super impressed! We primarily named it Galentine because of the delightful pink and its purpose as a gift. This sweater is great no matter when you choose to knit or wear it! However, if you are looking for a Valentine’s Day present, may we suggest the Stavanger project bag (pictured above) by muud? It would make a great last-minute treat for yourself or a loved one.

Stavanger is a crossbody project bag great for taking your WIPs on the go. The top opens with two zippers and inside there is room for yarn, notions, and your project. Earlier I mentioned that Galentine is knit in pieces. This makes the project more portable and there is plenty of room in Stavanger to store your yarn and the piece of the sweater you’re working on. It’s also great for shawl projects and other small accessories. Stavanger comes two colors: black (as shown) and whisky (a lovely brown).

Stavanger features several pockets for storing notions and the inside has plenty of space for your yarn and project.

So what will you treat yourself to this Valentine’s Day? A cozy new sweater? Decadent Dona? Or a nifty new project bag? We’d love to know!

Happy crafting!

Universal Yarn presents muud

If you have popped by our website in the last week, you might have noticed a new addition. We’ve added an exciting new line of handcrafted leather goods perfect for the crafting lifestyle. Muud is a Danish brand, and we’re so excited to be a retailer for their products in the United States. From project bags to chic storage solutions for your notions, you’re sure to find something you love.
Today, I wanted to share a few of the products that have quickly become essentials for my knitting.
Stockholm has plenty of storage space for your interchangeable needle tips, cords, and notions, like this needle gauge by Katrinkles.
When we first decided to bring on muud, I was immediately drawn to Stockholm. I knew I needed it for my interchangeable needle set. It perfectly stores the needle tips, has a zippered pocket for storing cords, notions, and the perfect pockets for holding my needle gauge. (Stay tuned – the needle gauge shown, created by Katrinkles for Universal Yarn, is coming soon!)
My favorite thing about Stockholm is the size. It is large and roomy, but folds up into the perfect size. It can easily be tossed into a project bag, and doesn’t take up too much space on my living room end table, where my needles usually live.
One thing I love about the line is the inclusion of small, adorable accessories that are ideal for storing your notions. Helsinki is a great storage container with a zipper closure. I’ve been using it to store my Katrinkles mini-tools as well as stitch markers, tapestry needles, and more.
No knitter or crocheter can get by without a tape measure. If I don’t have one nearby, I feel lost! Sure, I have the retractable tape measures, but I also have several of the regular ol’ tape measures. Enter Malmo – possibly the cutest, most useful storage solution for a tape measure I’ve seen. Malmo was designed specifically for them! Just roll it up, place it in the case, and snap it shut until you need it. It has a little keyring, so it’s so easy to attach to your project bag for safe keeping.
The Saturn XL will fit your project and your yarn – plus your needles and more!
Finally – the Saturn XL. Talk about an excellent project bag! It’s deep, has plenty of pockets both inside and out, and a handy strap to toss over your shoulder and head out the door. This bag will easily store projects of all sizes – including your latest sweater WIP.
Saturn XL
The Whisky colorway is perfect for me, but if brown isn’t your cup of tea, all of the products I mentioned come in black, too. There are also so many different styles and sizes to choose from. If you’re looking for a sophisticated treat for yourself or a luxurious gift for a fellow crafter, check out all of the products in the muud collection here (link).
