After adorable Easter Earl earlier this week, we’re moving to something classic and refined.

Damascus is named after the ancient metalworking technique that created the strong and beautiful patterned designs known as Damascus steel.

It’s an apt name. At first glance, this unisex pullover might appear plain, but look closer – Kingston Tweed’s blend of wool, alpaca, and viscose gives it extra interest and a lightly tweedy, almost heathered feel.

The sweater pictured is knitted in color 112 Basalt, one of a selection of sophisticated tones in Kingston Tweed.

Knitted on US6 (4mm) needles, Damascus is a lightweight three-season sweater that works well on its own or as a layering piece.

Work this design seamlessly in the round from the top-down. The body and sleeves are separated at the armhole and worked separately.

Free Pattern Friday – Olive

It’s Free Pattern Friday!
Today, Olive in Kingston Tweed and Penna (pattern link here).
First things first: the model for this hat is also the designer, Rachel Brockman. Rachel is a big fan of the outdoors, and takes a lot of inspiration from her time in nature.
We have it on good authority that one of her favorite yarns is Kingston Tweed – you’ve probably seen her fantastic Jay Sweater. For this hat, she took that rustic yarn and gave it extra flair by combining it with laceweight Penna.
We’re sharing the picture of the yarn to show exactly what Penna brings to the design – a slight blur to the edges from its soft alpaca halo.
You can see the gentle feel it imparts to this cable and rib delight.
Start with the cable panel, worked flat. Seam the ends together, and it becomes the brim of this hat.
Pick up stitches from the edge, and work broken rib in the round upwards to the crown. Love those decrease swirls!
It’s a gentle beauty of a design. We hope you enjoy it.

Free Pattern Friday – Atotoztli

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, Atotztli in Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash (pattern link here). Atotztli was originally part of Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash: The Aztec Collection. The collection features gorgeous graphic knits in – you guessed it – Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash.
In Atotztli, texture, stripes and fun Fair Isle come together in fun ways. Check out that funnel neck!
In this pullover, the front and back are worked flat. The sleeves are worked in the round up until the raglan shaping. The shoulder join appears as a striking demarcation between solid and stranded color work, for even greater visual impact.
We like how Amy Gunderson softened the colors by using a tweedy yarn that features elements of several of the colors, to unify the piece. This is a gorgeous piece for fall!

Free Pattern Friday – Arisoa

It’s Free Pattern Friday!
Today, Ariosa in Penna and Bella Cash (pattern link here). Sometimes, when you combine two beautiful things, you get something even more special.
In this pattern, fingering-weight Bella Cash is held together with new Penna to give a soft alpaca halo to this lacy pullover. Take a look at Penna on its own:
Held together with a vibrant yarn like Bella Cash…
…you get a fabric that’s soft and light, substantial yet perfect for lace.
Shown here in size Small with 5″ of positive ease, Ariosa is sized through 6X.
This sweater is worked flat and seamed, with some short row shaping on the shoulders.
The beauty of holding two thin yarns together is not just that you can mix their textures, but that you can use a larger needle than either calls for alone. In this case, a US6 (4mm) or the size that gets you gauge.

Free Pattern Friday – Marley

It’s Free Pattern Friday!
Today, Marley in Alaska and Whisper Lace (pattern link here). Isn’t this just beautiful?
Marley manages to be cozy, while still being delicate.
The hem is worked in Fibra Natura Whisper Lace, a blend of silk and superwash wool with a luminous sheen. To keep the body and hem in color harmony, the Whisper Lace is held with a strand of Rozetti Alaska, a lofty yarn with a lovely alpaca halo.
So soft. Soooo soft.
It’s just the thing if you’re looking for warmth without weight, all with immaculate style.

Free Pattern Friday – Hope Springs

It’s Free Pattern Friday!

Today, Hope Springs in Cottonwood (pattern link here). Hope Springs is a formerly pay-only pattern, found in the e-book Cottonwood: Arboretum.
The cover piece, no less!
There are some really beautiful knitted tops featured in the collection.

But the design we’re setting free today is the shawl on the cover, Hope Springs.
We took a few extra pictures of this piece here in our studio, to highlight its construction for you. Like how its 3/4 circle shape lets it sit beautifully on the shoulders…
…and what a smooth fabric organic Cottonwood makes. Look at that stitch definition.
Hope Springs is a beautiful sampler, featuring cables, lace, and ribbing.
Designer Amy Gunderson calls for an i-cord bind-off. It’s the perfect finishing touch for this polished piece.

Free Pattern Friday – Majorca Top

It’s Free Pattern Friday!
Today, the Majorca Top in Fibra Natura Lina (pattern link here).

When I was 17, I was lucky enough to go to Majorca (or Mallorca), the Spanish island this top takes its name from.
Yes, it’s that pretty. Couldn’t you just dive right in? No wonder the designer chose this as the inspiration for the gorgeous warm-weather lace top in cotton/linen Lina.

Mmm… Lina. I feel relaxed just looking at it.
Majorca’s lace sails traverse both front and back, as well as each sleeve. A loose V-neck keeps this light and comfortable.
And those bell-shaped sleeves! So many beautiful touches on this piece.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to dive in.

Ah, endless summer. In our neck of the woods, it means cicadas, fireflies, and clothes that let us enjoy the outdoors without combusting. Enter: Sandpiper, and Cotton Supreme Waves.

Waves has been a popular yarn since its recent introduction.

Wound into a cake, its long, harmonious color repeats make it simple to create pleasing and colorful garments and accessories.

Sandpiper uses the sand and sky tones of 905 Saltwater. It’s a great choice if you want something subdued and calming.

Free Pattern Friday – Lemon Drop Socks

It’s Free Pattern Friday!
Today, Lemon Drop Socks in Bella Cash (pattern link here).
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Bella Cash is the unsung hero of socks. I’ve knit myself several pairs in Bella Cash, and they’re still soft and good-looking even though I just toss ’em in the washer and dryer. Which is why I’m so happy to see a brand new pattern using Bella Cash today!
The Lemon Drop Socks are knit in the round, cuff-down. Colorwork is Fair Isle stranded.
They feature an afterthought heel, so-named because you’ll be putting the stitches on either side of the heel on waste yarn, then knitting the rest of the sock, then coming back to work the heel as an afterthought. Amy Gunderson shared a tutorial on this technique on our blog a while back – you can find it here.
This pattern is sized from toddler on up to adults, so it’s easy to make sets for anyone in the family! Matching tootsies, anyone?
A big “thank you” to our Design Lead Rachel Brockman for being willing to stand on her toes and model these for us. She’s talented in so many ways. 🙂

Free pattern Friday – Flouncy Fringe Tank

Hi, Talya!
Talya is the daughter of Yonca, our sales director here at Universal Yarn. When Talya spotted a ready-to-wear top in a shop, she asked her mom for one. But not just like it. With this change, and that change… pretty soon, it’s a new pattern!
Yonca used Fibra Natura Luxor, a sleek mercerized 100% Egyptian Giza cotton.
The bright colors make details like the stripe at the neckline and side seam really pop!
And that fringe is so cute!!
Really, the only thing better than a handmade gift is making a gift for someone who really appreciates it. And Talya does!
